When I was a 20 years old, a 40 year old mentor of mine put a copy of ANGELS IN AMERICA Parts 1 & 2 in my hands and said, “One day you’ll be in this.” I knew I was reading a work of genius. A masterpiece of the American Theatre. These plays won the Pulitzer Prize and every Tony Award under the sun. But be IN them? Never. I was a musical theatre chorus boy working in summer stock. I would never be in a play this important. I would never be old enough. Smart enough. A good enough actor. Never be brave enough to face its themes much less portray them truthfully. I would never be fierce enough, fabulous enough, flamboyant enough, weird enough. Awesome enough. 21 years later, I have been cast in ANGELS IN AMERICA Parts 1 & 2 at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, one of the best regional theatres in the country. I am playing Prior Walter, a gay New Yorker living with AIDS in 1985 – one of the scariest times to be alive in recent history. And here I am: old enough, smart enough, GOOD ENOUGH. Living in my power and tapping into everything in me that is unapologetically and openly gay, grounded, fierce, funny, flamboyant, and fabulous, sure, but also, intelligent, tough, wonderful, nasty, strong, gross… and brave. GOD’S GHOSTWRITERS: Enslaved Christians and the Making of the Bible – is her 7th book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in hidden history, social justice, and, well, all those guys out there who think about the Roman Empire multiple times a week.
