Barrett Foa Instagram - How can you possibly point to one thing that gets you to a milestone like 250 episodes of television? So many factors must come into play. So many people must focus on a single vision. So many stars must align. Wanna start with the cast? Sure. Thanks. But who is writing the words we say? Who is carrying the camera on their shoulders and focusing the frame? Who is lighting each and every shot so that it looks professional and dramatic. What about editing? And sound? And color correction and studio heads and network mucky mucks and make up and production assistants and location scouts and first assistant directors and second assistant directors? Who rented that helicopter? Who designed and built and decorated all those sets? What about the guys at crafty who feed us so we’re not cranky? What about the publicity ladies and the hair dept and stunts and special effects and the transportation guys who move the trucks and trailers around. Who’s keeping an eye on the money and casting all the guest stars telling the background actors where to move and when? Who is printing out scripts and formatting the rewrites? It’s just endless. We’re a large village of humans working towards putting out an entertaining 43 minutes of television each and every week. Barrett Foa Instagram - Yesterday was Nonnie’s 102nd birthday, so naturally, I raised a glass of scotch in her honor. She passed peacefully back in May at the ripe young age of 101 (and 3/4). She and I grew very very close over the past decade. I got to be with her on one of her final days, and I whispered all our inside jokes in her ear. She drank single malt scotch every single day of her life - I even named my dog Scotch after her favorite drink (mine, too.) Nonnie, I know you’re up there enjoying a Dewar’s (rocks glass, ice on the side) and secretly gobbling up milk chocolate Easter bunnies (solid only, none of that cheap stuff) in that big closet in the sky. Barrett Foa Instagram - I recently unearthed this pic of 17-year-old Barrett at the final performance of Interlochen Arts Camp’s High School Operetta production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s THE GONDOLIERS. I was never a lead in the Operettas, so this captured my disbelief and “awe-shucks-ness” at being awarded Most Outstanding Male Chorus Member OF THE LAST 25 YEARS. A slightly ridiculous if somewhat significant honor since the casts were huge. (I was chosen out of 1,000 guys.) (Looking back, I think they were just blinded by all that blush and my 90s center part. 💁🏼‍♂️ #goldenarches) I always liked performing in middle school, but the four glorious high school summers I spent at Interlochen Arts Camp plunged me headfirst into the dynamic, transformative, unifying power of The Arts. It was there I grew from a 14-year-old boy who liked to play pretend to a 17-year-old artist utterly devoted to his craft. For eight weeks and four summers, I stood side by side with student artists from all over the globe at the very top of their craft - from classical cellists to jazz percussionists, modern dancers to pottery makers, creative writers to Shakespearean actors - I was constantly in awe and constantly inspired. It was pure magic. Interlochen Public Radio recently interviewed me about my time at Interlochen, on Broadway, and on 11 seasons on NCIS: Los Angeles. I was the on-air backstage host and social media correspondent that year and after our interview I asked if we could do an impromptu tap dance together which I wish I had video of. On Jan 15, 2020, I was lucky enough to see Nick shine as Dennis on opening night of ROCK OF AGES in Hollywood. Nick passed away on July 5, 2020 from COVID-19 complications. Barrett Foa Instagram - When I was a 20 years old, a 40 year old mentor of mine put a copy of ANGELS IN AMERICA Parts 1 & 2 in my hands and said, “One day you’ll be in this.” I knew I was reading a work of genius. A masterpiece of the American Theatre.  These plays won the Pulitzer Prize and every Tony Award under the sun.  But be IN them?  Never.  I was a musical theatre chorus boy working in summer stock.  I would never be in a play this important.  I would never be old enough. Smart enough.  A good enough actor.  Never be brave enough to face its themes much less portray them truthfully.  I would never be fierce enough, fabulous enough, flamboyant enough, weird enough. Awesome enough. 21 years later, I have been cast in ANGELS IN AMERICA Parts 1 & 2 at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, one of the best regional theatres in the country.  I am playing Prior Walter, a gay New Yorker living with AIDS in 1985 - one of the scariest times to be alive in recent history. And here I am: old enough, smart enough, GOOD ENOUGH.  Living in my power and tapping into everything in me that is unapologetically and openly gay, grounded, fierce, funny, flamboyant, and fabulous, sure, but also, intelligent, tough, wonderful, nasty, strong, gross... and brave. The students of Pioneer Valley High School and their theatre teacher @selynharwin could not have been more welcoming, daring, connected, open, trusting, or talented. After I led them through warms ups (inspired by @therealalexandrabillings @emilystellafletcher and @zivameditation) I had the privilege of coaching them on songs and monologues. These young actors were tacking big, rich, mature material: “Being Alive” from COMPANY, “She Used To Be Mine” from WAITRESS, “Roxie” and “When You’re Good to Mama” (from their upcoming production of CHICAGO) and knocking every song out of the proverbial park. Perhaps my favorite moment of the day was one student who sang “This is Me” from THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. He was a bit timid out of the gate, but then he opened up about how he plays sports, but he feels his true spirit come alive when in the presence of his theatre community. I asked him to sing the song again - this time to his parents and football coach. He dug deep, accepted the challenge, and blossomed right before our eyes. As he sang, his body and his purpose came online, and suddenly all 50 kids were waving their phone flashlights from the audience like he was headlining a rock concert. Tears were streaming. It was one of those breakthrough moments every mentor and student dreams of and I’ll never forget it. Risks were being taken. Habits were being broken. “Ah-ha!” revelations were being made. We were all having so much fun that I stayed way past my scheduled 2 hours, and I got to cap off the day with a song. It was a joyous, rewarding, celebratory afternoon that reminded us all of the importance of art, connection, storytelling, truth, craft, and the sense of community that only theatre can provide. I am forever changed. The students of Pioneer Valley High School and their theatre teacher @selynharwin could not have been more welcoming, daring, connected, open, trusting, or talented. After I led them through warms ups (inspired by @therealalexandrabillings @emilystellafletcher and @zivameditation) I had the privilege of coaching them on songs and monologues. These young actors were tacking big, rich, mature material: “Being Alive” from COMPANY, “She Used To Be Mine” from WAITRESS, “Roxie” and “When You’re Good to Mama” (from their upcoming production of CHICAGO) and knocking every song out of the proverbial park. Perhaps my favorite moment of the day was one student who sang “This is Me” from THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. He was a bit timid out of the gate, but then he opened up about how he plays sports, but he feels his true spirit come alive when in the presence of his theatre community. I asked him to sing the song again - this time to his parents and football coach. He dug deep, accepted the challenge, and blossomed right before our eyes. As he sang, his body and his purpose came online, and suddenly all 50 kids were waving their phone flashlights from the audience like he was headlining a rock concert. Tears were streaming. It was one of those breakthrough moments every mentor and student dreams of and I’ll never forget it. Risks were being taken. Habits were being broken. “Ah-ha!” revelations were being made. We were all having so much fun that I stayed way past my scheduled 2 hours, and I got to cap off the day with a song. It was a joyous, rewarding, celebratory afternoon that reminded us all of the importance of art, connection, storytelling, truth, craft, and the sense of community that only theatre can provide. I am forever changed. Likes : 6324Barrett Foa - 6.3K Likes - I recently unearthed this pic of 17-year-old Barrett at the final performance of Interlochen Arts Camp’s High School Operetta production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s THE GONDOLIERS. I was never a lead in the Operettas, so this captured my disbelief and “awe-shucks-ness” at being awarded Most Outstanding Male Chorus Member OF THE LAST 25 YEARS. A slightly ridiculous if somewhat significant honor since the casts were huge. (I was chosen out of 1,000 guys.) (Looking back, I think they were just blinded by all that blush and my 90s center part. 💁🏼‍♂️ #goldenarches) I always liked performing in middle school, but the four glorious high school summers I spent at Interlochen Arts Camp plunged me headfirst into the dynamic, transformative, unifying power of The Arts. It was there I grew from a 14-year-old boy who liked to play pretend to a 17-year-old artist utterly devoted to his craft. For eight weeks and four summers, I stood side by side with student artists from all over the globe at the very top of their craft - from classical cellists to jazz percussionists, modern dancers to pottery makers, creative writers to Shakespearean actors - I was constantly in awe and constantly inspired. It was pure magic. Interlochen Public Radio recently interviewed me about my time at Interlochen, on Broadway, and on 11 seasons on NCIS: Los Angeles. These young actors were tacking big, rich, mature material: “Being Alive” from COMPANY, “She Used To Be Mine” from WAITRESS, “Roxie” and “When You’re Good to Mama” (from their upcoming production of CHICAGO) and knocking every song out of the proverbial park. Perhaps my favorite moment of the day was one student who sang “This is Me” from THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. He was a bit timid out of the gate, but then he opened up about how he plays sports, but he feels his true spirit come alive when in the presence of his theatre community. I asked him to sing the song again - this time to his parents and football coach. He dug deep, accepted the challenge, and blossomed right before our eyes. As he sang, his body and his purpose came online, and suddenly all 50 kids were waving their phone flashlights from the audience like he was headlining a rock concert. Tears were streaming. It was one of those breakthrough moments every mentor and student dreams of and I’ll never forget it. Risks were being taken. Habits were being broken. “Ah-ha!” revelations were being made. We were all having so much fun that I stayed way past my scheduled 2 hours, and I got to cap off the day with a song. It was a joyous, rewarding, celebratory afternoon that reminded us all of the importance of art, connection, storytelling, truth, craft, and the sense of community that only theatre can provide. I am forever changed. The students of Pioneer Valley High School and their theatre teacher @selynharwin could not have been more welcoming, daring, connected, open, trusting, or talented. After I led them through warms ups (inspired by @therealalexandrabillings @emilystellafletcher and @zivameditation) I had the privilege of coaching them on songs and monologues. These young actors were tacking big, rich, mature material: “Being Alive” from COMPANY, “She Used To Be Mine” from WAITRESS, “Roxie” and “When You’re Good to Mama” (from their upcoming production of CHICAGO) and knocking every song out of the proverbial park. Perhaps my favorite moment of the day was one student who sang “This is Me” from THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. He was a bit timid out of the gate, but then he opened up about how he plays sports, but he feels his true spirit come alive when in the presence of his theatre community. I asked him to sing the song again - this time to his parents and football coach. He dug deep, accepted the challenge, and blossomed right before our eyes. As he sang, his body and his purpose came online, and suddenly all 50 kids were waving their phone flashlights from the audience like he was headlining a rock concert. Tears were streaming. It was one of those breakthrough moments every mentor and student dreams of and I’ll never forget it. Risks were being taken. Habits were being broken. “Ah-ha!” revelations were being made. We were all having so much fun that I stayed way past my scheduled 2 hours, and I got to cap off the day with a song. It was a joyous, rewarding, celebratory afternoon that reminded us all of the importance of art, connection, storytelling, truth, craft, and the sense of community that only theatre can provide. I am forever changed.
