32. Every year is a jump. But this one kicks. This year I drove across the entirety of Australia twice. Once solo. I learnt that friendships without conditions are like oxygen. They’re fundamental to existence. Realized you can get used to anything, so be deliberate in your choices. Like playing music in front of people. Therapy and meditation are the frontline defenses, not medication. A mid-day dance off with Liz in the kitchen is never time wasted. Needing and being needed is fab. You have to be as willing to be kind to yourself, as you are to others or it doesn’t count. It depletes. And that we are mostly, if not entirely, made up of stories. Our job is to challenge each one to the death if they would like to remain. Actual magic lies here. —– This time last year I was sick & asleep on a couch in Perth. And here I am, back in Europe writing from secret Giardinos somewhere in Tuscany and hugging tight old friends in Southbank, nestled in contented silence from a last minute decision. Change is the one thing we can bet on. . Boom. Let’s go for another round then.

My standards are so high because my friendships have set a new standard of normal. The little effortless intimacies that trace our time together. Holding hands when we drive, last minute flights on tough days, and voice notes to share the brilliant nothingness of the day. The way they want to know you and love you at your pace. The constant move to celebrate and advocate for you when you forget to. Friends that dont give you advice, but just say ‘whatever you decide, I’ll be right there with you’. Friends who couldn’t possibly judge you because they trust you with your life and love watching it unfold. Linger longer and let them in. . To my beautiful friend who took me in last year when I was in a spot and doubled the feelings of life. You are worth celebrating every damn day. Last night before I head back to the city and apparently I’m feeling dramatic about it.
Life purpose might actually be noticing as many little moments as possible. And I’m OK with that.
Just out here, romanticising my life a little. Pretending my life is a Boticcelli painting and making friends with Chica, the black street kitten who thinks I’m part feline. Grazie Italia. You were the quiet kindness I was struggling to give myself.
