President Biden didn’t mention former President Donald Trump by name, but the annual speech carries extra significance in an election year and his frequent references to and contrasts with his “predecessor” were clear.

🚨President Biden will announce in his State of the Union on Thursday that he is ordering the U.S. military to build a floating pier off Gaza, in what the White House called an “emergency mission” that would allow hundreds of truckloads of additional aid to be delivered by sea to Gazans who are on the brink of starvation, per @nytimes reporting.
The project will take several weeks, involving hundreds or thousands of U.S. troops on ships just off shore, in keeping with Mr. Biden’s mandate that no American soldiers be on the ground inside Gaza as the conflict rages. Briefing reporters, administration officials said that the port would be constructed in cooperation with other countries in the region, but it was unclear whether Israel would be joining the effort.
The new project gives Mr. Biden a concrete project to point to in Thursday night’s State of the Union Address at a time that he is under sharp criticism for not reining in Israel’s attacks, and moving too slowly to address the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza.
The new seaport, when completed, would be an additional route for humanitarian aid, which is currently limited to two land crossings into the southern part of Gaza. Officials said Thursday that a third land crossing, into the northern part of Gaza, could open to limited deliveries within a week.
Mr. Biden also recently ordered the U.S. military to drop aid into Gaza by air. American pilots dropped their fourth load into the territory on Thursday.

Six years ago, I visited Storm Lake, Iowa, a town that was doing a great job at integrating immigrants from all over the world starting with Vietnam in the 1970’s to now. Recently, I read an op-ed in the @washingtonpost written by Art Cullen, editor of the @stormlaketimes, about January’s Iowa Caucuses. I met Art during the filming of a series I did for @natgeo in 2018 called America Inside Out. I tackled topics like political correctness on college campuses, the removal of Confederate statues and iconography, Islamophobia, tech addiction, and other hot-button issues.
With the recent political news, I wondered how Storm Lake had changed and how the immigration debate was impacting Art’s community. So I emailed him and asked for an update. We included his response on our website, which you can find at the link in my bio.

🚨The Supreme Court on Monday restored Donald Trump to 2024 presidential primary ballots, rejecting state attempts to hold the Republican former president accountable for the Capitol riot. Though the justices offered different reasons, the decision was unanimous. All agreed that individual states may not bar candidates for federal office under a constitutional provision, Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, that bars insurrectionists from holding office.
The outcome ends efforts in Colorado, Illinois, Maine and elsewhere to kick Trump, the front-runner for his party’s nomination, off the ballot because of his attempts to undo his loss in the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden, culminating in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
Colorado’s Supreme Court, in a first-of-its-kind ruling, had decided that the provision, Section 3, could be applied to Trump, who that court found incited the Capitol attack. No court before had applied Section 3 to a presidential candidate.
The case was decided by a court that includes three justices appointed by Trump when he was president. They have considered many Trump-related cases in recent years, declining to embrace his bogus claims of fraud in the 2020 election and refusing to shield tax records from Congress and prosecutors in New York. 🚨NIKKI HALEY IS OUT OF THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE — leaving Donald Trump as the last remaining major candidate for the 2024 Republican nomination.
“I am filled with gratitude for the outpouring of support we’ve received from all across our great country. But the time has now come to suspend my campaign. I said I wanted Americans to have their voices heard. I have done that. I have no regrets,” she said Wednesday in South Carolina.
She warned Americans about the plethora of problems that lie ahead, saying, “the world is on fire.” The former South Carolina governor emphasized some of the issues she ran on: the threat of national debt to the American economy, the need for small government and the importance of standing by Ukraine, Taiwan and Israel.
@nikkihaley’s departure clears Trump to focus solely on his likely rematch in November with Biden. The former president is on track to reach the necessary 1,215 delegates to clinch the Republican nomination later this month.

As always, so appreciate my friend richardhaas President emeritus of the @cfr_org updating us on Israel, Gaza and US foreign policy. I always learn so much from him. I know this is such a contentious topic but I hope you find this conversation illuminating.
On Sunday, Vice President Kamala Harris called for an immediate six-week ceasefire in Gaza to facilitate a hostage deal between Israel and Hamas, and pressed Israel to do more to increase the flow of aid to alleviate the “immense scale of suffering” among Palestinians.
Her remarks are some of the strongest made by a senior US official regarding the protection of civilians in Gaza. Today, VP Harris will meet with Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz at the White House.
A six-week ceasefire is currently being negotiated that would allow for the release of Israeli hostages and open access to aid. President Biden has suggested that a deal could be in place soon. Senior administration officials said on Saturday that there is a framework that Israel has essentially agreed to but Hamas still needs to sign on.
Over the weekend, the US Air Force and Royal Jordan Air Force worked together, parachuting more than 38,000 meals along the Gaza coastline. The United Nations says 1 in 4 people in Gaza face “catastrophic levels of food insecurity.”
