It was a lovely evening catching up with friends Julia Gillard and Commissioner June Oscar at the launch of the Wiyi Yani U Thangani Institute last night. Labor has a long history of supporting First Nations gender equality and our government is committed to continuing that progress.
Great news! We’re making a landmark investment in remote housing across the Northern Territory. The 10-year commitment by the Federal and Northern Territory Governments will see up to 270 homes built each year, with the goal of halving overcrowding. It also includes continued support for repairs and maintenance. This investment is a game changer that will make a difference to the lives of so many Aboriginal people living in remote communities. It’s not just an investment in housing, it’s an investment in people. Increasing housing supply will ease overcrowding, which we know is a major barrier to closing the gap. This government is committed to improving housing in remote communities and closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

Connecting with Elders and Country is so important for our youth. On-country, community-led programs keep kids engaged in school while connecting them to culture. One of these is the Junior Ranger program, which partners kids and schools with local Indigenous ranger programs. Kids get to learn more about their culture and are excited to head to school and stay engaged. So we’re expanding the Junior Ranger program to 50 new sites across Australia. This means more students can take part in this amazing project, just like these students from Gumbaynggirr Giingana Freedom School in Coffs Harbour NSW. The Junior Ranger program has delivered proven results by keeping First Nations students engaged in school. This is just one way the Albanese Government is investing in closing the gap and making a difference.

They would be the last to tell anyone, but Peter and Matthew here have done something rather amazing. They’re two of the four people in Barton who were recognised for their service to our community on Australia Day. I caught up with both of them for morning tea to thank them for their important work. Dr Matthew Chu received a membership of the Order of Australia for his work in emergency medicine, and Peter Leondaritis received a medal for his long service to the Greek Australian community. So many Australians like Peter and Matthew go above and beyond for the community, and they don’t do it for recognition. But let’s give them a big congratulations for their achievements.
The Albanese Government is helping people in remote communities get real jobs with proper wages and decent conditions by replacing the failed Community Development Program. I visited Kalano Community Association in Katherine to see how they’re trialling new ways to create jobs. They’re creating opportunities for people like Neo Maroney who’s been busy making swags, and Edwina Murphy who’s part of the Deadly Cooking program. By working in partnership with community organisations like Kalano, we can make a difference. Because local communities know what works for them. And our Government is committed to making a difference on the ground so we make progress on closing the gap.

Community organisations and the people who volunteer their time for them don’t often get enough thanks for their important work. So I took some time in Parliament to thank some of the amazing organisations in our community of Barton – @pcyc_stgeorge, @fixitsistersshed and CASS Care’s Gumnut Early Learning Centre. Our Government’s Stronger Community Grants are supporting those organisations to keep up their incredible work.
Great opportunity to hear about the issues that matter to the 83 members of the Northern Land Council across the Top End. Aboriginal Land Councils represent Traditional Owners and support communities, building opportunity for future generations. It was also a chance for the Prime Minister and I to discuss our $4 billion remote housing investment and update about the remote jobs program. Congratulations to Matthew Ryan for being elected as the new NLC chair. I know you’ll bring a wealth of experience advocating for the Top End.

Everyone deserves the security of a roof over their head at night. So we’re making an historic investment in remote housing. We’re doing it in partnership with the NT Government and community organisations. Because investing in housing means investing in people too.

Gumnut Early Learning Centre in Hurstville has been able to upgrade their baby changing and bathing facilities thanks to the Government’s Stronger Community Grants.  CASS Care do a wonderful job of providing childcare and setting up children for school and beyond.  Groups like CASS Care play such an important role in our local communities. It was a pleasure to see for myself how the Grants are supporting that work – and spend time with these gorgeous little ones!
