Ana Marie Cox Instagram – I’m doing a series of posts on my experience/interpretation of the Twelve Steps over on buymeacoffee.com — it’s my low-stakes version of a newsletter, because I still really hate newsletters. You can give a one-time donation and get on my mailing list, or you can just visit once a week for a new essay.

A reminder that if you enjoy or are inspired by these, I teach a workshop on writing your recovery! The next session will begin in late April. More info at anamariecox.com/thirdstory

This week is on Step Two. Here’s the excerpt:

A squad car waited outside the hospital door. The Black female police officer who helped me out of the chair also put on a pair of handcuffs. I was crying hard and still very dopey. I don’t remember if my husband or my dad were able to comfort me I just remember sobbing in the back of the car, snot running down my chin.

“I’m sorry, honey,” the officer murmured to me. Her kindness made me cry harder. “I really am sorry. I am so sorry. We’ll be there soon. I’m sorry, sweetie, I’m so sorry.” | Posted on 22/Feb/2024 19:51:28
