Who would’ve pegged me as a guajira? Los paisajes de Cuba son una maravilla. The Cuban countryside is unreal. I recommend you go there and buy tobacco directly from the farmers. They are forced to give 90% of their crops to the government and only have 10% to sell themselves. It’s more authentic this way and you’re helping the farmer, who takes so much pride in growing their tobacco, fruits, veggies, and coffee. Btw, I did not know how to smoke a cigar. At the risk of losing my Cuban card, I will post in my stories 😅

Have you ever been somewhere for the first time and immediately felt like you’d been there before? That’s what happened to me in Old Havana. I didn’t know the names of the streets but I felt like I walked them before. It was eerie but weirdly calming too. Please watch until the end to see the difference between the tourist area and the daily reality of the Cuban people. Thank you to my newfound primo @perezalverdi for showing us around la Habana Vieja 🙏🏽💙❤️

While in Cuba, I visited the town where the Fit family was from, Guanabacoa. I met the few relatives we still have there, whom I’ve only ever spoken to through WhatsApp. They treated me with such love, kindness, and care. It was like I’d known them all my life. Thankfully, the woman who now lives in my family’s old home (pictured here) was happy to give us a tour inside.
While the house has changed and deteriorated with time, I can still picture where my grandfather played dominos on the front porch and where the Christmas tree was set each year — in front of the three columns in the living room, now partially blocked by new stairs. I only cried like, five times.
Picture Descriptions:
1 & 2. The Fit Family Home – Where my grandfather, grandmother, dad, uncle, great grandfather, great grandmother, great aunts, and great uncle lived (a total of 9 Fits!).
3. The living room
4. The back of the house
5. Some of my remaining family in Cuba
6. My uncle dressed as a ______ (any guesses?) and my grandfather (second from the right) with his friends
7. My dad when he was a baby in Guanabacoa
8. Cine Teatro Carral – The now abandoned movie theater where my grandfather watched what would become his favorite movie, King Kong
9. What was once the courthouse in Guanabacoa where my grandparents got married, now in ruins
10. My grandfather’s favorite niece, resembling my grandfather

Exactly a week ago I celebrated my 40th birthday in a place I thought I would never see, my homeland of Cuba. My grandparents fled in 1969, leaving everything (including family) behind to give their children and in turn me, a better life. For many years I’d only heard stories about Cuba. About its beauty, sadness, and its stolen promise. I had (still have) complicated feelings about going because it cost my grandparents so much to leave. And yet, it breaks my heart that my grandfather never got to see the beach he called “la mas linda en el mundo” again (the most beautiful in the world). But here, in Varadero Beach, I felt closer to him than I had since he passed. I’d like to think that he was there, celebrating my milestone birthday with me and encouraging me to continue to explore my roots.
A special thank you to my good friend @msjliu for not only accompanying me on this “heritage tour” but for initiating it and making me feel comfortable about going. I appreciate your patience, even after hearing my family story for the 700th time (I was asked a lot thanks to my “pinta Cubana” — Cuban look), but mostly for making my birthday so special with surprise after surprise. She’s the kind of person who brings a suitcase full of medicine to give out to the people in Cuba, who so desperately need it. I am so grateful for you and your big heart 🩷
I really wanted to do something meaningful for my birthday this year and this experience has been that… and more. That said, more to come!
