I LOVE this #helenawrapdress by @just_patterns and plan to make a longer version next on my make list since a SoCal fall is actually hotter than our summer- this pattern really shines in silky, flowy fabrics so I’m gonna keep up that trend! Another #helenawrapdress by @just_patterns in animal print rayon from @lafinchfabrics_new and a #marjorieslingbag by @heyjunehandmade in spotted leather from a local shop plus memade clogs to make round out this *last dregs of summer fit check* (though who am I kidding- it will be hot in LA til November 🥵). I am in love with the silhouette and ease of wear of this dress which is why I made it twice, but I think the instructions are unnecessarily tricky and so are a few of the pattern pieces- the explanation for making the waistband is pretty confusing and I thought it was because the first time I made it years ago I might have been tired or something, but this time around I got stumped by the exact same things! Wouldn’t recommend this to a confident beginner but it was definitely worth the trouble for how beautifully it came out- I lengthened the dress several inches to make it a maxi and otherwise made no mods. I’m on the fence about what to make next- I have one last warm weather jumpsuit on my roster and not sure if I should wait til next year or squeeze her in now, as I have *several* fall/winter pieces I’m excited about too! Love being overwhelmed by inspiration and ideas-I know that wherever I end up will be great 🥰
My neighborhood besties @cyndiotteson and @quinnofeaglerock gifted me the cutest diy miniature room kit to put together last year, and I loved it so much I asked for a bigger kit for christmas, and at long last, only 9 months later 🥴, it’s finally done! This kit was like my personal equivalent of a 1,000 piece puzzle (though I’ve never done one so I don’t know how accurate that is). All I know is that it was extremely intense, required so much focus that I felt cross eyed at the end of some sessions, and required every bit of my concentration for long periods of time. However there were also so many moments of sheer delight along the way to completing this that it truly felt worth all the extra patience I mustered from the bowels of my being. I am so proud of myself! Bear got me an amazing magnifying craft light that was a tremendous help and allowed me to do really detailed work without straining my eyes too much (I also use it for my manis!) Every single thing in this greenhouse, with the exception of the wood framing pieces, beads and the “glass” roof, was cut out, pasted, sanded, shaped, built and glued together by hand. Those teeny flowers and petals, the shovel made out of a toothpick and paper, the garden hose and faucet, all created by hand. By the time I finished this I was so curious about the brains behind the designs! It’s truly remarkable work! I will definitely be taking a break from this intricate kind of craft for a while (I’ve got a beautiful crocheted lamp next up on my list!) but I would love to do another kit one day- @rolife_official has so many beautiful designs but I obviously wanna make the dressmaker’s boutique and one of the bakery/kitchen builds, too. I can’t tell you what a joy it’s been to be in community with my neighbors and share the joy of sewing with them. The aha moments and maker’s highs I’ve gotten to experience with them has been absolutely delightful! I made the popular @criswoodsews #envelopedress earlier this year in a stunning silk velvet from @promenadefabrics and I knew it would be the perfect beginner pattern for Quinn and Cyndi. It’s a size inclusive (pattern is based off your individual measurements) no waste pattern that doesn’t take up a lot of fabric (I think it was @wzrdreams who articulated my issue with a lot of no waste patterns- many of them use soooo much fabric that it kind of makes the *no waste* part redundant). The pattern is perfect for beginners and has a lot of versatility in how you choose to style it and what fabric you make it in- a total winner for me and will be my go-to for all my friends who want to try their hand at sewing! Another dreamy silk velvet from @promenadefabrics but with a twist! I held off sewing this textile for a very long time because silk velvet had proven itself to be my nemesis. On past projects I used every trick in the book (hand basting, spray adhesive, an abundance of pins, both parallel and perpendicular ) to keep the fabric from shifting and moving under my needle and misaligning the raw edges, but *nothing* worked. When dreaming about what to make with this chocolate stunner (and feeling anxiety about the process) remembered that soaking shifty silks in gelatin and hanging it dry turned the fabric into something close to paper, making it MUCH easier to sew, and I wondered if the method would work for fabric with pile. I scoured the internet (and by scoured I mean I googled once) to see if anyone had tried it and written about it but found nothing. Luckily I had a scrap of peach velvet leftover from my envelope dress, so I decided to fuck around and find out and soaked it in gelatin, then hung it to dry. And what do you know?? It worked a charm! I immediately drenched my whole two yards of chocolate silk velvet, and within a couple days I was able to sew this entire dress up as if it were cotton 🤯 The zipper (which I moved to the underarm instead of at center back because OUCH) is so exquisitely sewn in and invisible that I have to hunt for it whenever I put it on (zippers and silk velvet are typically 😖😖😖 for me)! I’m sure I’m not the first person to use this trick on silk velvet but maybe I’m the first person to tell you about it? Which is awesome! And the best part? Once it was sewn up I washed and dried it in the dryer with another load of laundry and it came out even softer and more supple than it was on the bolt. Unbelievable! Pattern is #plieadesdress – not my favorite but I’d made it before and knew it would be simple enough to let the juicy fabric take center stage but interesting enough to feel special. This make absolutely delights me every time I wear it and it’s as soft as it sounds 🤎 pics don’t quite do the fabric justice but in the last slide you can see what the fabric was like post-gelatined- stiff and crunchy!

Pattern is #plieadesdress – not my favorite but I’d made it before and knew it would be simple enough to let the juicy fabric take center stage but interesting enough to feel special. This make absolutely delights me every time I wear it and it’s as soft as it sounds 🤎 pics don’t quite do the fabric justice but in the last slide you can see what the fabric was like post-gelatined- stiff and crunchy!
Another dreamy silk velvet from @promenadefabrics but with a twist! I held off sewing this textile for a very long time because silk velvet had proven itself to be my nemesis. On past projects I used every trick in the book (hand basting, spray adhesive, an abundance of pins, both parallel and perpendicular ) to keep the fabric from shifting and moving under my needle and misaligning the raw edges, but *nothing* worked. When dreaming about what to make with this chocolate stunner (and feeling anxiety about the process) remembered that soaking shifty silks in gelatin and hanging it dry turned the fabric into something close to paper, making it MUCH easier to sew, and I wondered if the method would work for fabric with pile. I scoured the internet (and by scoured I mean I googled once) to see if anyone had tried it and written about it but found nothing. Luckily I had a scrap of peach velvet leftover from my envelope dress, so I decided to fuck around and find out and soaked it in gelatin, then hung it to dry. And what do you know?? It worked a charm! I immediately drenched my whole two yards of chocolate silk velvet, and within a couple days I was able to sew this entire dress up as if it were cotton 🤯 The zipper (which I moved to the underarm instead of at center back because OUCH) is so exquisitely sewn in and invisible that I have to hunt for it whenever I put it on (zippers and silk velvet are typically 😖😖😖 for me)! I’m sure I’m not the first person to use this trick on silk velvet but maybe I’m the first person to tell you about it? Which is awesome! And the best part? Once it was sewn up I washed and dried it in the dryer with another load of laundry and it came out even softer and more supple than it was on the bolt. Unbelievable!
