(First of all, the umbrella in the background of these pics is so distracting I almost didn’t post them but then I remembered that I’m a recovering perfectionist and this is just an opportunity to luxuriate in my humanness lol). Second of all, it’s my birthday! This Aries is welcoming 44 with bright eyes, an open heart, and so. much. gratitude. I love myself. I love the relationships I have cultivated over the past few years. I love my life’s journey, even when it’s been bumpy and full of question marks. I love all the years that got me to where I am now. I am so lucky 🥹!!’ This is another version of the #knowme2027 jumpsuit in a meticulously pattern-matched checked fabric from @blackbirdfabrics , topped off with a brown linen from my stash. Big fan of this pattern, no mods and fit is amazing, plus great pockets (instructions a little questionable/unclear at times which I highlighted in my previous make). Woke up to so many incredible messages of love and sweetness from people on this app- thank you all so much for taking time in your day to throw some love on me 🥹 Thanks to all my friends that were a part of my special surprise day today and thanks the most to @savageblackout who is already making 44 stand out as big, bold and beautiful! I love you so much ❤️
I finally made a gay audacity video 😂 I want it to be known that my audacity is primarily black, femme and cheap, but it definitely intersects with my queerness, too! After getting the cracked ceiling and walls in our office replaced and painted, I decided the room deserved a nice, new bookshelf in lieu of the unsturdy aluminum one we had had for 10 years. But all the nice RTW bookcases I found were upwards of $1500 a piece (we needed two) and I didn’t want to get something cheap from ikea that might not last as long as I needed it to (no shade to ikea- I love that store, but many of their items can be categorized as fast furniture and I wanted something with more longevity). I found the Puzzle Bookshelf plans at @anawhitediy ‘s website, my favorite for free, accessible furniture plans, and I have been making her projects ever since I learned how to build furniture from her book, The Handbuilt Home, of which I am a huge fan. The shelves took about 3 weeks to build cause I was working on my own and trying not to rush the process, and cost me something around $500-$600. I decided to turn the removable cubbies that connect the bookcases into cabinets with doors so I could hide our printer and files and after reading @dabito ‘s home dec book, I was inspired to use caning for the doors to elevate the look and add another organic dimension to the build- Bear wanted the room to feel like they were in a beautiful woodsy area with dappled sunlight filtering through the trees, and the caning lends itself to that aesthetic so nicely. Although I was so sick of this project in the last leg I am utterly pleased with how gorgeous this project turned out and I am pleased by my own tenacity and stubbornness to see it the end. This isn’t the most complicated build I’ve made but it’s physically the biggest and my oh my the Learning Successes™️ I had throughout could fill a book! Here’s to tapping into your own delusional maker audacity that, with a little patience and a lot of gumption, can become a reality too! ❤️❤️❤️
I made the #mothwingcapelet by @minimalistmachinist last November and it was the *perfect* project to reignite my connection to sewing after taking a little hiatus. I’ve never made a pattern quite like it before- the instructions were sparse which was a little uncomfortable for me initially, but I think that was part of the magic- it gives you so much room to experiment and explore and make the wings super unique to you. Everything I used was from my stash and remnants of other projects except for the multi colored pieces on the front, which was actually a carpet sample I found at @remainders_creative_reuse . Wasn’t sure what inspired me to buy it but of course I’m so glad I did because when I ran out of the faux suede for the main body of the wing it allowed me to be inventive and create a more dynamic palette! The faux suede was leftover from throw pillows, the furry leather a bucket bag, the snakeskin-like leather is from a pair of shoes, the gold is what I used for my buddy Quinn’s Xmas gift, and the silk velvet is from the cris woods envelope dress I made last year. I am still stunned at the silhouette of this- from the side it really looks like moth wings at rest! What a fun project from a super talented, generous and out-of-the-box maker who is always contributing to the community in cool ways ❤️ I would suggest this project for intermediate makers and beginners with a knowledgeable buddy to talk them through any tricky parts (experiential know-how is important for this pattern as she doesn’t hold your hand through it, but my partner, a very beginner sewist, made a gorgeous pair with my help). Congrats, Rachael ❤️❤️❤️

I want to close out the year having documented my last couple months of making, which was inspired by finding my-my-my sewjo❤️ 1. I finally decided to learn to read crochet patterns, and being a lifelong knitter, I’m glad I got over myself, as crochet has been scratching the itch that knitting has failed to accomplish the last couple years. I made this shawl mimosa by fiore in a couple weeks with yarn from @missceliespants that I only know as being an Italian wool and feeling like a silky cotton (as someone that’s sensitive to lots of wools that others seem to tolerate just fine, that’s saying a lot). 2. A crocheted doll for my new young friend Ruby ( pattern by @sweetsofties – she also has a little penis pattern that is so cute I might have to make some to give as gifts!) 3. speaking of gifts I made the most Xmas gifts for others this year than perhaps ever and the joy and delight I got from it (even though I was stressed about finishing in time) was such a surprise to me. Maybe I’ve gotten better at making for others- Everything fit and everyone was happy! makes me excited to do it again maybe just start earlier than dec 1?!?!? 🙃 Peek-a-boo patterns kids button up in matching African wax print for my nephews and… 4. My dad! After he opened it he said it reminds him of a Nehru style shirt he loved that someone gave him when he was a kid 🥹 (Dan shirt by @efpattern ) 5. Upstyled @quinnofeaglerock dream pants by partnering some bell bottoms on poshmark and with a little gold leather from my stash ⭐️ 6. Used a gorgeous no-stitch leather pattern by @mprleatherworks to make some gifts out of leather in my stash- @lastassembly when are you dropping ur own 👀👀👀 7. I made this painters vest for my brother from sew what patterns on Etsy and was immediately obsessed with every detail. On him it’s fitted and looks great of course but when sized up with a cute little outfit underneath on me, it gives such a cool and relaxed aesthetic. I have already made plans to make one for myself in the same size 😮💨 8. The #mothwingcapelet by @minimalistmachinist is the project that got me out of my #NoSewJo slump in nov. It’s getting its own post soon 🧡
