When I was a very young actor (in fact, I was practically a baby haha) I was able to join the actors union. (To clarify — my dues are due by 10/31/23 – then I get a new card. I am not qutting on 10/31/23!!). That was what every actor in Chicago aspired to do. It was an achievement and something that can be very difficult to attain what with the catch-22 and all. I have always been a proud @sagaftra member. I don’t ask much from them. I pay my dues and THANK GOD I can make reasonable pay, get health insurance, and pension benefits. Lately, with the strike, I have had to reach out to my union leadership multiple times. I know they are overwhelmed, and they take a while to respond, but they do answer my questions. It is a challenging time. I want to support my Latino brethren, in their filmmaking endeavors and in their TRIUMPHS Which make my heart so full I want to cry. Sometimes that can’t be done because of strike rules. Is it frustrating? YES. But the bottom line is, I have succeeded in being a professional actor, able to make a living in my chosen field, thanks to the decades of precedent setting contract terms pushed through by our union leadership. #tbt #STORYTELLING- it is a human event as old as time. Just because the tv and film industry is falling apart as an avenue to participate in a creative, meaningful artistic endeavor, doesn’t mean people will stop writing, acting, putting on shows – stage, tv, film, video- whatever. It’s just not going to stop. STUDIO FINANCIAL WOES: Even as studios are presumably losing money, they collectively pay billions to their CEOs (so, there is “some” money). Their business gyrations have not worked out for them (see Bloomberg story link below). Only Netflix, the OG streamer, continues to be profitable. CREW PEOPLE- Camerapersons, Grips, Sound, Stuntpersons, SFX, Animators, Set Design and Construction, Costumes, Props… all these and more are the forgotten in this standoff. They are scrambling — so many of them are SCRAMBLING – to get a job. They are expending their entire life’s savings. The writers and actors are not the only ones out of work. AMPTP GOALS. The AMPTP are the strategists and money people. Their one goal is NOT to make a hilarious picture that will be beloved by all; NOT to make a creative and technical masterpiece; NOT to create a glimpse into the psyche of our humankind. Their only goal is to squeeze every drop of profit out of every project, to the detriment of the people who actually make the product – writers, actors, directors, cinematographers, crew of all kind. I.E., Stunt persons are getting LESS TIME to practice their stunts, MORE dangerous stunts over LONGER and LONGER DAYS, causing more accidents. (more and more complicated stunts to stun the viewers into awe, but less pay to the stunts by reducing hours). ACTOR PAY & BENEFITS FACTS: I don’t know about the WGA members but only 7% of the actor’s union make $80k or more; only 14% make enough for health insurance i.e. appx $26,000/year. (see Rolling Stone story link below). Know that ALMOST NO actors make mortgage-paying money. The @SAGAFTRA fight is simply a way to help those actors lucky enough to even book a job a little more money to pay their bills. #sagaftrastrike #wgastrong #sagaftrastrong

Here’s one: Too Few Roles for Latinos. The Hispanic Population is almost at 20% in the US. I had a conversation about undocumented Hispanics with an actress at the #PNMC festival so I thought I’d share some facts and also, I believe this is another #obstacle to the Latino artist @pnmc_festival — peeps in the U.S. have a skewed understanding of how many undocumented latinos there are. And Americans have a Poor Tolerance for los indocumentados. (tbc!)

They work very hard, usually for work Americans don’t want to do and for bad wages (why don’t we ever go after the American employers?). #Latino #brownpeople #xenophobia
