Day 4 of the @ncazaleafest was a whirlwind, in the best way! We began with the ribbon-cutting for the garden tour where we met the dedicated members of the Cape Fear Garden Club, then onto the legendary #garden party at #airliegardens where a magnificent, healthy 500 year old oak tree presides. A highlight for me was speaking with the @UNCW Sustainability team https://uncw.edu/seahawk-life/services/sustainability/about/ ( @sustaindub )which watched over our impact on the historic grounds where only compostable dining material were used. Mom and I got our puppy fix from the service dog training organization and I got to thank the law enforcement particularly @newhanoverso Sheriff Ed McMahon and his officers for their service during the week. The weather was perfect for spring fashions and photos by the waterway, for Middle Of The Island Catering’s fried chicken and sipping on sponsored @aperolspritzofficial . Did you know that the 77 year old #azaleafestival brought in $50 million to @newhanoverco People were enjoying each other in such a genuine way that it makes me miss their warmth and hospitality already. President @auheel58 and @mayorbillsaffo , thank you for the throwing the best #gardenparty on the Eastern Seaboard! After dancing on the deck of the @bluewaterdining with future #ncazaleafestival President @chrgore , he assisted my official handprint process with expertise. The evening called for wardrobe change for the traditional photo with my motorcycle escort, one that I’ll treasure, then off to the Queen’s Dance Party for girls pursuing the honor of representing their local communities. Finally a chance to relax at the @chaseric concert at @liveoakbankpav with my friend and personal escort, the indispensable and indefatigable @jenhenunc 🙏🏻 BTW, the glam by @elbluebird and @kristiwt held up for 16 hours! My heart is so fulfilled with not only the opportunity to work along with many new faces I can call friends, but to really see how our community comes together as one. . I had an eye opening experience visiting Rocky Point Elementary, The Boys & Girls Club, & Novant Hospital visiting with all the children and young adults. From the performing arts, dances, orchestra performances to even a fashion show, it brought tears to my eyes and I’m not even a crier. I could truly tell how excited the children were to see everyone, especially the 👑 and to show us their home away from home. . A week ago, a thrill of a lifetime…a coronation… as the 77th #QueenAzalea at the @ncazaleafest 2024. The honor of wearing this beautiful (and original) crown has been enjoyed since 1948 by many women you know- film stars Ester Williams, TV stars @phyliciarashad Rashad , Shelley Fabares, and my pal @amypietz , soap stars, Nancy Addison, and yes, also #KellyRipa, as well as many NC pageant Queens. When the accomplished and gracious Festival Board of Director President , Andrew Nettleman and his fellow Officers ( all stars in the Cape Fear Region) and their terrific Staff contacted me with this special offer, I was moved and grateful- both as a NC native and as an actor who has loved filming in Wilmington over the years. For those unfamiliar, it’s a remarkable week long event of community celebrations honoring spring and the beauty it brings to the storied North Carolina coast, the opening of #azalea blossoming and the local garden season and the colorful and committed community of the Port City. This was opening day and the Coronation had been scheduled to take place on deck of one of the most famous US Navy Battleships, the @USS North Carolina, but wind and rain changed our plans so we stayed warm and dry thanks to the classy @hotelballast ! As many of you heard me say last week, appearing as #QueenAzalea requires a ‘team of professionals’ who volunteer their services. In addition to @camillesofwilm which offered complementary pieces like this garden green dress by @jovani want to thank my long-time colleague from LA, @robinsiegel , now a Wilmington resident who MU for the Coronation and also Kari Delaney who took care of hair for a few of the days. For the next week, I’ll highlight my encounters with the law enforcement escorts and local school leaders, pediatric nurses and famous music stars, the dazzling party people and dainty princesses, the delicious Eastern NC BBQ and seafood, I’ll fill you in on the fun images (most captured by my escort, lifeline, fellow #unctarheel and friend @jenhenunc) and great memories as #queenazalea 2024 .
