My mentor in life, Daisaku Ikeda, passed away a few days ago at the age of 95. Through his encouragement, I was able to believe in the inherent dignity of myself and others; stand up for justice, learn what’s good and evil, find hope where there is none, and never ever give up. He was the first person who ever taught me that women, youth and mothers should be treasured in society. He taught me how to become strong while young so I can help build a more peaceful society. He also taught me that a woman’s life begins in her 40’s! :). He was able to touch millions of people’s lives in this way without ever having met him. And including the dignitaries he met, everyone felt seen, heard and valued. One-to-one dialogue was his passionate stance for building peace. I love this picture of him and his wife, Kaneko; a picture taken by his son. The second slide was taken in 2006 when I had an opportunity to perform for him with other artists in Japan. Be it summit diplomacy, or the various interactions of private citizens in different lands, genuine dialogue has the kind of intensity described by the great 20th century, humanist and philosopher, Martin Buber, as an encounter “on the narrow ridge”, in which the slightest in attention could result in a precipitous fall. Dialogue is, indeed, the kind of intense, high-risk encounter. #buddhismdaybyday
