Caption : THE HAPPIEST MOMENT. I was very happy to see Capt Dipendra Singh Khatri recovering well in hospital in Kathmandu. @Eliteexped team and I were involved in rescuing him from the South Summit of Everest this week – this is the World’s Highest Rescue Mission. We brought him down from the South Summit (8,749m) to Camp 4 (7,950m), where two Sherpas from his team met us and took on his care. I am glad to see you well Brother! This is a great result – when you put so much effort into a rescue and risk so much to try and save someone’s life – to see them recovering well in safety is the best feeling. It’s hard to describe that feeling that you have made a real difference and saved a life. Sadly, not all high-altitude rescues have this happy outcome – rescue missions like this are life and death in the Big Mountains. Sadly, some of those we tried to rescue during 14 Peaks unfortunately died, even though we gave our everything, even putting aside our mission to try and save lives. That’s what makes this positive outcome so fantastic for my whole team. I wish you a great onward recovery journey Brother! For a number of reasons but one is that now Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) – including Gurkhas – can have dual citizenship. Currently around 2.17 million Nepalis live abroad, and they send remittance money home to support their families. 50% of Nepalese rely on remittance from family living abroad – this remittance accounts for roughly 30% of the total GDP for Nepal. The UN has designated Nepal as one of the 46 least developed countries in the word – and currently Nepal is facing an economic crisis. Research shows people that have moved, migrated or dispersed from their homelands have contributed significantly to the development of their native lands through remittance, technology and knowledge transfer, philanthropy, and diplomacy. Giving NRNs dual citizenship creates positive change for Nepal and her people – bringing more tourism, investment and prosperity into the country. Next it’s on to motivational speaking in Bulgaria, talking about how we summit our own mountains in life. Caption : RESCUE AT SOUTH SUMMIT/WORLD’s HIGHEST RESCUE! Some of my Elite Exped team and I were involved in rescuing a climber from another guiding company on our way down from our Everest summit. We found the climber Capt Dipendra Singh khatri , from another team, at the South Summit of Everest (8,749m). The climber had been there overnight. I am thankful to my clients Jack and Will Lundin, for releasing me and Pasang Jharok to go and help with this rescue. Thank you to @anyatraveler for releasing @guideyukta and @alasdair_mckenzie for releasing Ki Temba to help. Even though they have paid us to be their guide, our clients kindly released us to help in this rescue. Together we brought the climber all the way down to Camp 4 (7,950m) and there we handed the climber into the care of two Sherpas from the other guiding company. We are now all safe at Camp 2 – together with our clients who re-joined us at Camp 4. We understand the climber and Sherpas have not made it back to Camp 2 yet. We wish the rescued climber and the team the very best and all we hope for is that they are safe. I am very proud of my @eliteexped team and clients – on the mountain we are all one community and we look out for each other. The Base Camp is found at the bottom of the Khumbu Glacier, it is surrounded by the beautiful peaks of the region. We invest in our camp to make sure it is the best experience for our adventurers, with great coffee, a fully stocked kitchen tent and food, and showers, power and electricity. While we take our set up seriously, we also take our responsibility to the environment just as seriously. We follow all environmental protocols, including leave no trace and clean as you go. Our Base Camp is powered by a solar array that supplies all the energy we need. We have a back-up generator in case the weather turns bad – but in general we rely on solar power. Base Camp is a place where our adventurers spend time to rest, acclimatise and prep for their climbs and acclimatisation routines (*or just rest before trekking back to Kathmandu.) Want to join us? Caption : SHISHAPANGMA UPDATE: My team and I have been working very hard behind the scenes since the tragic avalanche to try and get Anna and Mingmar home to their families. Out of respect for their families, and because we have been grieving ourselves, I have not posted on here. But don’t confuse that respectful silence with not caring or not taking action to help and support their families, our team and everyone involved in this sad event. We have been working hard with all authorities and organisations involved. We gained the kind permission by the authorities to return up the mountain to recover Anna and Mingmar back to a safe location at Camp 2. I led the team to find our loved ones and bring them down to Camp 2 – this is as far as we are allowed to bring them currently. We have their precise location. This was tough on the team both physically and mentally, but we needed to do this to ensure we could find them again. We are now working with all authorities on repatriation – this will involve a helicopter flying to Camp 2 to bring them home to Kathmandu and then on to their families. I am so grateful and thankful to everyone working so hard to bring this about. All we want to do is reunite the families with their loved ones this climbing season. In that time we have experienced immense grief but also reflected on precious memories we shared together and now so deeply treasure. Now I am heading back with my team to Shishapangma to retrieve our loved ones – Anna & Mingmar. Until this point, the repatriation process has been incredibly challenging. We had managed to bring Anna and Mingmar down to Camp 2 last year, so they were protected from the higher elements for the repatriation, but the biggest hurdle was gaining the full permission to bring them home. We bared the expenses to make this happen, and now, with permission from the CTMA and TMA we are ready to go back to their known location at camp 2 and bring them home to reunite them with their families and loved ones. Collectively the US Government, Nepalese Embassy in Beijing and NMA have worked closely with the team to secure permits and we have recently been informed our application will be accepted; we will begin the repatriation in April. We are immensely grateful to CTMA, TMA, and the Chinese Government for allowing us to bring Anna and Mingmar back to their families and loved ones This mission is special to me. These days it seems like everyone has an opinion on everyone and everything, and the worst thing is these opinions are made by people who don’t know you at all 🤷🏽 To the younger generations reading this, my advice is this: rather than spending time on reading comments on social media – invest that time in yourself. Invest in your growth, invest in achieving your #newpossible for you. Your true asset is your knowledge and your experience. I invested in myself – while I was with the Gurkhas through to United Kingdom’s Special Forces – I kept learning, and growing my mindset. Though I left my school at Year 10 in Nepal, I managed to achieve my Post Graduate Diploma whilst still serving in the busiest job within the UKSF. #NoExcuses. Rather than buying houses from the money I saved through blood, sweat and tears – I literally emptied my savings and if that wasn’t enough, I would take loans to climb big mountains on my holiday break from the military. When my other work collegues had multiple houses in United Kingdom, I had only one. That didn’t bother me, I knew I was preparing myself for something big. It took me 36 years to break that threshold for myself. Finally, I invested in myself by staying fit and healthy – I trained well and I looked after myself. Remember your biggest asset is your wellbeing, your knowledge and your experience. Caption : BACK TO THE MOUNTAINS. My heart is still heavy from this last month. I am so proud of my @eliteexped team for the way they have pulled together to support each other, our clients and of course the families and friends of our beloved Anna and Mingmar. I am now in Kathmandu – still working hard, alongside all the team, families and all authorities involved to get all the correct permissions needed to bring the helicopter to Shishapangma Camp 2 to bring them home. It seems easy for a few people that have done a few 8000m summits on the fixed lines set by Nepalese climbers to become experts after these tragic events. But for me and my team, our experience is current, we live and breathe the mountains – it is my home for most of the year, no exped leader has as many successful 8000ers and climbs as I do. I would ask certain media to be respectful and remember that they are talking about four people that have lost their lives. It’s too easy for people to become “experts” after the event – but this is not right and it’s not fair – you have to be there, involved and in the moment and you need to know all the details and the full scenario on the ground. Reflection should be for the greater good, not for toxic headlines. Be compassionate and take positive action rather than negativity. For us, we remain on standby for the helicopter mission, we hope for a positive resolution soon. Despite what the team have been through, we are looking forward – we know our loved ones would want us to. This week, we will welcome our Ama Dablam and @skydivenimsdai teams to Nepal. It seems strange to think about going back to the mountains again, however the mountains have always brought me peace and healing. And I have full faith in my team. Caption : BACK TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Guys I’m back on the ground in Pakistan leading expedition on big mountains. However, I am proud to say my @eliteexped team, led by @mingma_david_sherpa are on the ground at K2 and busy setting up an extra special mission – the #BigMountainCleanUp whilst I’m on Nangaparbat. This year the focus will be on removing old lines and ropes and cleaning as much as possible. Working with the @nimsdai_foundation, the team will be heading back up this majestic mountain to do our part to help protect and restore this beautiful environment. I have said it before, but high-altitude waste is a complex issue – some of it has been here decades. Often storms rip up camps and encase gear in ice. I believe we need education and a solid plan to move forward positively. My @eliteexped team have zero-tolerance policy to waste and we follow ‘clean as you go’ and ‘leave no trace’ protocols. But sometimes storms can destroy camps and sweep away gear. This is our way of doing our bit, I feel so strongly about this. It costs a lot to fund this – because it’s not like a littler pick at sea-level – it is much harder at high altitude, so this is a specialised and skilled job. Big Mountains need Big Action. I am so proud of Rochelle Gilmore ( @rochellegilmore )and very happy for her– she has just summitted Everest and Lhotse with us @eliteexped Rochelle has complex medical conditions which makes it very hard for her to acclimatise at high altitude – people didn’t believe that she could achieve it because of her medical conditions, which include: allergic asthma, Hypogammaglobulinemia, Cholinergic urticaria, hypertension, Haglund syndrome and allergies – including certain medications. However, with careful planning and consideration of all the health concerns, we were able to work together to create an all-round plan to support her to make her dreams possible. Firstly, she summitted Ama Dablam with us last year and then, guess what? Rochelle smashed Everest and Lhotse.
