Watch as Phil Collins performs “One More Night” live on Wogan in 1985 🎹 The song was released this month in 1985 as the second single from “No Jacket Required” and became his second #1 hit in the United States, following “Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)”.
This week in 1999, Phil Collins released the soundtrack to Disney’s “Tarzan”. Written and composed by Phil, the soundtrack features vocal contributions from NSYNC, Rosie O’Donnell and Glenn Close, alongside an original score by Mark Mancina. It was also notably the first Disney soundtrack to be recorded in different languages, with Phil recording the album in French, German, Italian and Spanish! The album was a worldwide success, selling over 2 million certified copies in the U.S. alone and received the Grammy Award for Best Soundtrack Album. Additionally, the lead single, “You’ll Be In My Heart” won both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song.
“Against All Odds (Take a Look At Me Now)” was released as a single #OnThisDay 40 years ago! Originally written for Phil’s debut album “Face Value”, the song was left off the final tracklist due to Phil’s preference for other ballads that he had written at the time. Phil intended for the song to stay unreleased until he was approached to create the theme song for the neo-noir film “Against All Odds” by director Taylor Hackford. Due to being on tour with @genesis_band at the time, he sent the unfinished version of the track to Hackford who loved it and insisted he finish it for the film’s soundtrack. The song became one of Phil’s signature ballads and won him the 1985 Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance 🎙️
