When I was young I found it so hard to understand who I was supposed to commit my life to romantically. Love was something I so easily felt. Loving a boy or a man in all their ugly faults came naturally to me. I had a well-spring of love to give, but where to put it?
It took spending a lot of time with a man who loved me well and who was deeply aligned with my values for me to realize that a life-partner isn’t determined by whom I love. No. Love is a choice and I could choose to love anybody. A life-partner is determined by how the other loves me, how the other receives my love and if our deepest drives and values align.
The feeling of love is the easy part. The act of love is much less sparkly. Who loves you well? Who knows how to receive your love? And do their core values align with yours?

A few days before Christmas, my cousin was catching up with me. She asked me how I was doing and I told her, “I might never have been better.” It was a very good feeling. This week I’m knocked out with a killer sinus infection, in tremendous pain, stuck in bed. “Thank you for joy, thank you for pain.”

(Flying Part 1)
I just traveled 18,566 miles in two weeks and didn’t watch a single movie. I rarely watch a film on a plane. In that aluminum bubble jetting through time and space, I feel a decadence I want to relish. Whether I’m sitting in coach or up in first class, there are certain experiences I get on board hoping to have the luxury to cherish.
I want to read, calmly, leisurely, not in the hurried pressed way I usually do at home with the kids, and work, and life. I want to really chew on the words, roll them around in my minds eye and let them absorb into me, like coke on the gums.
I want to engage with strangers. Even if it is as small and simple as a warm “hello” with the person I am sitting next to, eyes-twinkling at each other, smiles tender and relaxed, and then not another word all flight, it’s still special – a moment shared.
I want to listen to music, with my eyes closed and nothing else to take my attention. Really listen, to every chord, every note, every instrument a whole album through. That’s right, albums. I love the art and journey expertly constructed for a good album.
I want to write. I want my thoughts to pour out like rain rushing down a gutter’s sides, I want to splash onto the sidewalk within, a torrent of thought, feeling and creative conception. I want to drench and darken the soil of my soul until, suddenly, I’m standing in a garden, nourished and happy.
And, every once in a while, I like to have something meaningful happen with another human being…usually a stranger. But that takes time, and attention, and taking my nose out of my books, and screens, taking my earphones out and looking around.

(Flying Part 2, con’t from previous post: Flying Part 1)
On my flight to Brazil, my French Canadian flight attendants transported me back to my childhood, growing up in the the Great White North. They were warm, easy, open, friendly and comfortable in that customarily Canadian way. Their ease with other people, the softness in their smiles that said “you are my neighbour. I know you”, made me feel like I was in their living room and we were old friends. I remember almost everyone being like that when I was a child, growing up on the prairies. There was no such thing as a stranger, just a neighbour I hadn’t met yet.
On my flight to New York, unbeknownst to me, my seat mate was inwardly wrestling…his life was at a point of convergence and his emotions were sitting so close to the surface. First we talked about his sweater, then the view of the snow-covered Rockie mountains and next thing you know we’ve been having the most beautiful heart-to-heart for hours, tears have been shared and a special memory has been made.
My friend, Paul, describes this phenomenon as Askesis. In Paul’s words:
“Plane rides are an Askesis, a Greek word that means “training” which [] Eugene Peterson [used to describe]Jonah being changed in the belly of the whale by virtue of being stripped away from his regular life and being held in that singular-natured environment. In an environment that held him in check to the Truth, leading him to admit what his destiny was. The belly of the whale was forced Askesis. And plane rides are very much a “belly of the whale” too – untethered from the familiarity of solid land, high in the air in total surrender to the pilot and enveloped in the womb-like drone of the engine sounds and air friction. In plane rides (like in long showers, jogs, meditation and listening prayer) we’re stripped away from our regular scattered ways and held still, but held still with a purpose and subsequently trained towards the Truth.”

What a beautiful way to usher in the Christmas season with @jhpiego’s #laughteristhebestmedicine gala! I was so happy to be there to honour my friend @slevydirect and his incredible wife, Serena, alongside @hasanminhaj and his incredible wife #BeenaPatel.
A comedy-star-studded evening, @tompapa @nickkroll and @ikebarinholtz helped @jhpiego raise hundreds of thousands of dollars toward medical care for women and families through giving us all the gift of laughter. (Ike, you killed it in the auction! #toughestjobinthehouse.) Even the likes of @amyschumer #willfarrell and @vancityreynolds showed up remotely with their wit and hearts on fire. 🔥
