Phew this took a bit to get through but truly hoping it opens up some healthy dialogues as well as setting us up to do the internal work of challenges ourselves.
I wrote this with two things in mind:
1- I’ve seen this #quote used over and over again, usually watered down and seldomly investigated.
2- #thematrix, specifically towards the end of the second movie when Neo finds out that the uprising is actually built into the system. Well it’s just like that, protest and other forms of activism that work within the system are just like that. We continue to replay the cycle expecting something new without pause long enough or fully committing to a world beyond this system. It’s a scary thought for many of us and won’t come with ease. But to break free of the cycle what are you willing to risk?
⁉️Here’s some more questions for reflection⁉️
✨What does dismantling oppression mean to you?
✨ What do you envision when you think of a world outside of colonialism, capitalism, and imperialism?
✨ How would we go from where we are today to where we would like to be?
✨ How genuinely committed to that aim? What are your internal and external barriers?
✨ What were your ancestral ways of being before colonialism invaded and disrupted your culture?
✨ What is the revolution? What does it look like when it’s realized?
We must not only know to fight against what is wrong but also have the foresight to recognize what it is we are aiming to build up to.

If we decide to let them divide us, if we don’t intervene and remind each other that law enforcement doesn’t keep us safe. If we can’t lean into our values and build coalition even when it’s hard, we aren’t going to win. And when I say we won’t win, I mean we will stay disconnected and traumatized and forget how important we are to each other.
I have a lot more thoughts and feelings but please use your platforms wisely.
Protest is Democracy in Action.
Law enforcement repression is authoritarianism in action.
We need abolition. It’s the only thing that will save us.
In this latest drop of #Artist2Artist, we spoke to the amazing team behind the powerhouse documentary visual album, “Songs From the Hole” and explored the reality that art is truly egalitarian. No matter your circumstance, creation as an outlet is what brings us back to our humanity and we see this so starkly in richie reseda’s emotional account of his experience making art while incarcerated.
“Songs from the Hole” is currently being shown at film festivals and plans are underway for an impact campaign to bring it to prisons, jails, and communities impacted by state violence and gun violence. Contessa continues to spearhead poignant documentary narratives. JJ’88 has released his fourth single, “Hustla’s Lament”, and richie reseda serves as the Creative and Political Director of For Everyone Collective, a space dedicated to supporting the artistic and economical contributions of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals.
This week, we call you to revolutionize your ideas of documentary filmmaking, examine your personal sense of expression, and open your ears to the authentically human, raw, and inspirational journey this film has shared with the world.

The compassion and empathy with which @osopepatrisse educates is unmatched! This is such an amazing reminder that feelings are meant to be felt and coalitions consist of people who have all been pained but will not let that pain dictate their humanity.
There are so many moments like this throughout the latest bonus episode of Reset the Algorithm with @Mother_Tongue_Magazine. Listen now or read a condensed version of our conversation in their latest edition out May 1st!
This is a public appreciation post, for @_heyywonton for supporting the Abolition Is…. course and bringing in her work in the Abolition Dream Lab.
I’ve known Haewon since she was 17 years old. She was a mentee of mine. And over the years our relationship grew into one of my most important friendships ( chosen fam ).
Haewon has been a critical leader in the Black Liberation Movement and has used her skillset as a tj practitioner to call in a new culture, a culture that’s centered around abolitionist practice.
It was such a gift to have you lead our course today Haewon. I love you and I’m so proud of your work.
Right now my art is anchoring my whole entire spirit. It’s anchoring my lineage and my healing. These works, machetes, pocket knives and swords are a birthright I didn’t realize I had access to.
These spiritual weapons, used to train my spirit in protection, boundaries, and edges. I’m grateful for them. Grateful for the way they remind me who I was, what I am and who I am to become.
Give thanks. Ashe ooooooooooo
My inspiration will always be Black femmes.

I’ve been reflecting a lot on what it means to protect Black women and femmes, what it means to protect ourselves in a country that not only refuses to protect us but actively attacks us and tears us down. What it means to protect Black women and femmes when our entire country is focused on punishment and revenge. What does it mean to be tethered to old narratives? What kind of stretching is required of us? Where do we put our exhaustion? Who protects us?
Sometimes you need to thrash, and dance and rage, and scream. And that’s what we did!!!!!
Thank you @welcometolace for commissioning this new work, and thank you @ladyblake23 for envisioning this piece alongside me and to my cousin Darius who has been one of my protectors. Dancing with family is so healing.
Thank you to the audience for singing and screaming alongside us.

Exploring the intersection of art and accountability, this weeks’ conversation explores the process by which the team collaborated on their film, and the importance of centering the artistic voices and experiences of incarcerated individuals. Through the process of creating his music with richie reseda, and bringing his album to the screen with Contessa, JJ’88 reflects on the power of finding community, and the deeply cathartic, healing and artistically triumphant film they created. Contessa, 88 and richie are a brilliant example of using film as a conscious, authentic medium to highlight a narrative that has the power to re-shape our society.
