May 2023 began in Colombia at a birthworker immersion program lead by the sagacious and sexy midwife @sumistouch
I’ve done multiple “doula trainings” but in my 14 years of doing this work “on the side”, whenever I feel the need to sharpen my skills in, I return to her trainings.
Her revolutionary spirit, her clear channel, her commitment to tradition, and her honoring of the innate power of the birthing person, resonate deeply with the part of my soul that has carried this wisdom for lifetimes.
At Asoparupa, a birthing center in Colombia, we sat at the feet of granny midwives and attended the World Pre-Summit of Traditional Midwives, where a hundred joined in person and at least a hundred more joined online.
To witness their passion for returning to a culture of sacredness in birth, for returning to the ways of the midwife as the solution for the maternal health crisis plaguing the world right now, was beyond inspirational, and beyond necessary.
Thank you, @sumistouch , for bridging the gaps, uniting newbies and experts, and showing us the path to a future where Black women, and subsequently all women, can bring forth new life in safety, health, joy and community.
At the end of the video, Sumi says: “menos miedo, menos dolor” when responding to a young woman’s learned fear of birth. Translation: “less fear, less pain.”
Then, I’m thanking the midwife for the love I feel in her birthing center and wishing for everyone who comes through their door to feel the same love, to have beautiful, successful births, and to leave with a better understanding of how natural and supported the birthing process can be.
We chant “nacer con partera es nacer en comunidad.”
“To be born with a midwife is to be born in community.”

In April, I did a talk for @elevationbarn with my soul brother, Will Travis, while at the TED conference in Vancouver.
The conversation was one of those experiences where I could feel healing and clarity taking form with every word that left my lips.
I hadn’t had much time to prepare, but sometimes “off the cuff” simply means “in the zone”, and this was one such time.
I later attended one of their retreats and I’m still integrating everything I learned and set in motion there! I’m so grateful to be a part of that community.
The TED conference itself was a vortex of brilliance, curiosity, creativity, inspiration and urgency.
It was heavily dominated by conversations around AI and the opportunities and risks it poses…
I met Wanjira, the daughter of one of my sheros, Wangari Maathai, and so many other beautiful souls.
I ended the video with a moment from a trip to Universal Studios with family at the end of April, because that’s what the conference was for me. A power up!
It stirred up so much in me.
I have so much to say, and can’t wait for my turn on the stage…

2023 was a master class.
Its collective grief was paralyzing.
Still, I’ve been instructed by Spirit to share the old so that I can focus fully on the new.

My new niece was born!
My lil bro became a Baba!
My mother delivered the bassinet that I and all of my siblings and cousins slept in as newborns!
The women in our families came together to make mama’s belly mask!
I got my brother the coolest dad shirts and both dad and baby loved them!
I hula hooped in the streets!
I got dressed up and went outside!
I met Victoria Rowell and cried because I realized that watching Drucilla in “The Young and the Restless” as a tiny human was one of my inspirations for becoming an actor!
After multiple requests, I finally taught one of my favorite nail techs to tie a headwrap. She felt so beautiful and proud!
“The Lincoln Lawyer’s” Andrea Freeman is such a gift!
Here she’s saying, “The facts don’t lie.”
Sounds like one of 2023’s themes.
The truth will always be revealed, indeed. 💫
