What does zoo keeping and Gardening have in common you may ask. Well on closer inspection it’s clear to see that we don’t have animal life without plant life. Plants not only provide food and nutrition but they’re also the valuable resources for shelter and habitat, a home for them to feel safe. This week on @gardeningaustralia we are heading to @australiazoo where I get to meet @robertirwinphotography , his mum @terriirwincrikey and some of the passionate zookeepers who share the importance of plants to our animal life, healthy ecosystems and conservation for the future . #zoos #zookeepers
You know that feeling when there is a task you want to so in the garden and you finally get a chance to do it and look back at a task complete. Well my vetiver grass verge garden hedge has been taking advantage of the rain and temperature here in sydney the last few weeks and been growing deluxe. So i gave it a good autumn cutback and shape . Vetiver is the perfect barrier cor my vegie patch as it keeps passing dogs and traffic off the garden but diesnt compete with whats growing because it is deep rooting so i can plant right up to it. And because it grows by clumping and not seed I can simply seperate when it multiplies and replant to thicken the hedge. Thats what i was doing at the end if the time lapse. It also acts as a great little retaining wall and keeps the soil from cascading onto the footpath. A perfect filter / screen plant around drains to capture and settle sediment and runoff. And everything i trim i can drop straight on the garden as a straw mulch #vetivergrass

Drinking up the golden hour light and calm of the Goulburn Wetlands. Such a great example of community collaboration to create a wetland habitat that grows from strength to strength. Put it i to your diary for a mist visit when driving up or down the Hume Hwy from Syd or Melb or if you are in the region at all.
