There something I find incredibly rewarding about pruning fruit trees and at this time of the year its perfect to do a late summer -ish prune in mid autumn. I was talking about this to Alice Zaslavsky on what is our regular sat morning yarn on @abcmelbourne. ThIs lemon tree is down in Melbourne and after what has been a fairly wet summer there is a lot of new growth and even fruit but it was a good time to take off as you can see a lot of the branches that had grown over the roof height onto the roof and were brushing up against the house. I didn’t want to go too hard because there’s still a lot of fruit on the tree and it is not a structural prrune that would take off a lot of the fruit bearing branches for next year. Take this task as a bit of a trim on what is a tree that I won’t give a big prune to for a couple of years. I love lemons and I love pruning them to see the way they respond. There’s a whole basket full of lemons off the prunings along with about another 60 or 70 on the tree so I’m going to juice these and freeze them into cubes. Thank you Lemon tree for being such a provider. #lemontree #backyardfruittrees #growitlocal

There are always examples of plants that have grown into their happy place and are serving multiple purposes and this Hawthorn of Rhaphiolepsis is one such plant . Right on the coastal frontline at Port Macquarie it is serving as a great wind deflector for the front door of the i its and balcony as well as being a privacy screen from the street to the balcony and the apartment. As it has grown it now has space for an under storey of planting choices too.
When the ever predictable leaf blower kicks in like a metronome when we were filming yesterday with @gardeningaustralia what else to do than return the gesture. You can never take peace and quiet for granted thats for sure . Just when you think it is safe to call “ACTIION” .
@b.o.ze.n.a has created a stunning garden by getting to know the challenges and extremes of the Goulburn NSW climate. As a result of her appetite to learn she has tracked down and applied all sorts of advice and created a garden that is flower field and produce plenty. It is such a pleasure to be able to share her story on @gardeningaustralia. She is a wonderful example of step by step growing a garden-and your experience from scratch. Thanks for the welcome and hospitality Bozena 🧡🌻🧡
Have you had to resort to a palmbrella when the rain catches you unaware. Well thats where our cinematographer Sam found cover when we were filming in Coper Park and the rain snuck up on us. We always have a mix of little@lwft field challenges when it comes to filming for @gardeningaustralia and there is always a way around them. The #palmbrella did the job Cooper Park is a@slice of bushland squashed between bindi junction, woollahra , and double bay that is the most immediate “get out of the city” when you are in the city opportunity to be immersed in nature . #cooperparksydney #naturewalk
There is always space hidden in plain view offering us the chance to grow just when we thought we were maxxed out. Containers on a staircase are a chance to have a herb garden like this simple one. Don’t underestimate the power of the potted plant to grow a garden. #containergardening #herbsinpots #growyourownfood🌱 #growitlocal #herbs
Sandcastles and their allure are such a childhood memory for me that hasn’t faded or been smothered and carted out to sea by the currents of adulthood. I love making them, their texture and smell take me back to being on the beach for endless hours of construction , excavation and creative fun. Today i have been building sandcastle with my nephew and the sounds, smell and feel were just as they always have been. Whats ya position on sandcastles ?

The garden beds we make are super easy, cheap, and productive. If you’re wanting to grow food on grass, get some cardboard from a bike shop or whitegoods shop and cover the grass, wet the cardboard, and then add a bit of soil or compost. If you’re not dealing with grass, you can skip this step. You can just make garden beds without an edge, but honestly making an edge with whatever you have lying around makes life so much easier. We used old fence posts that we got for cheap from a local farm. Other people use old bricks, logs, or scrap timber. We didn’t screw ours together, we just placed them around the bed, making sure each bed is the same size. They keep the compost in the bed and the wood chip out of the bed, and it means next season when everything is overgrown, it’s easier to plan what goes where next. Add some fertility by adding compost, then plant your seedlings in. We make hoops out of poly pipe – make them twice the width of the bed. We hammer bits of rebar in to the ground for the poly pipe to slot over. Then, if you have problems with birds like us, cover in pieces of orchard net that have been cut to size to protect your plants. Stay tuned to see how they grow 😁 How do you do your garden beds? What do you think of our way? #brennaquinlan #gardenbeds #diygarden
