Get you a husband that still kisses you like the day you met 16 years ago, and make sure to eat a tuna fish sandwich right before you do. It will really kick off the romance. Happy anniversary to my favorite satirist, my grouchy sweetheart, my sensitive, curious, love.
To celebrate, at 1pm ET today @DavidCrossOfficial and I will be live on a very special Zoom for my newsletter subscribers talking about all things marriage (super easy, not hard at all!), raising children (even easier!), and some of the best memories from our wedding (H. Jon. Benjamin dressed as a rabbi interrupting the ceremony)! Subscribe to our free newsletter and you’ll receive an email before we go live with the Zoom invite. Link in my bio.

The June 10th issue of the New Yorker is out now with my poem, “This Living” appearing across two pages of it. Feeling very lucky and proud today. I finally got to see it in print and yes you better believe I absolutely did do a photoshoot for the occasion. Link in bio to read it online, or pickup a copy this week.

Here’s the cover for my dad’s memoir (thank you People Mag for the reveal!) and I’m so proud of this major life accomplishment happening at 88 years old. Dad’s been working on this book for over two decades alongside his co-writer Sarah Tomlinson, collecting his incredible stories of tumbling through Hollywood as an actor and acrobatic dancer, from teaching Elvis Presley some signature dance moves, to befriending Henry Miller, and starting an art and cultural revolution in Topanga in the 60’s alongside his peers and friends, Dennis Hopper, Neil Young, and Dean Stockwell. There’s behind the scenes from West Side Story, Twin Peaks, working with Elizabeth Taylor and so much more. The book comes out April 9th 2024. I promise you won’t want to miss this wild slice of history. Pre-order link in my bio.
Love you, dad!

Had a powerful conversation at @vitalvoices festival, “Voices of Solidarity,” discussing the critical role men play in the fight for gender equality across the world, and how men must get involved and care about this issue not as a favor to us, but because all our struggles are deeply intertwined. We need allies, yes, but more than that, we need action.
I spoke to leaders at the forefront of this work:
-President of @equimundo_org Gary Baker
-VP of Gender-Based Violence Advocacy at Vital Voices, Marina Pisklakova-Parker (who also started the first ever domestic abuse hotline in Russian more than 30 years ago)
-Artist and Co-founder of @artlordsnet Omaid Sharifi
-The Secretary General, Organization of the American States, Luis Almagro.

Today is the sixth anniversary of the publication of my novel, Any Man. Any Man follows the lives of several men who are assaulted and haunted by a female serial rapist; a holy terror you can’t quite put your finger on who goes by the name Maude and who authorities and the media can’t seem to identify, let alone find. The award-winning audiobook was voiced by a stellar cast, led by actor Ben Foster (pictured in slide 4 in the recording studio) as the main character, Donald Ellis. I don’t think I could explain the book better than Ben once did when he said, “Any Man is a powder-keg story that challenges our deepest fears of bodily violence and identity. It is at once terrifying, heart wrenching, and often sharply humorous. It’s a provocative investigation and interrogation into masculine fear, silent shame and ultimately, healing.” Now, multiple printings later, and as I begin writing a new novel (more on that later), I’m reflecting back on this book and the way it’s continued to find new readers years later. I wrote more about it and shared some behind-the-scenes pictures for our newsletter which you can read at the link in my bio. #AnyManNovel
I was sickened to discover this morning that not one but three of my books appear in this list without my or my publisher’s permission— it’s a list of all the books being used for generative-AI system training purposes called Books3, created by Meta, Bloomberg and others. (Did I mention without permission? Without permission.) You can see my name and the three books (poetry, non-fiction and fiction) come up as a matched search on the second slide in this post. Versions of this are happening in the entertainment industry, which is why Writers and the WGA went on strike for over 100 days, and SAG-AFTRA is still on strike.
I’m so disheartened to see my books being used in this way without my permission, and though I don’t quite know where to go from here, you can trust the triple Taurus in me WILL fight this, in every way possible. Please spread the word.
Thank you to Alex Reisner at The Atlantic for reporting on this and creating the searchable database, which you can find in the pictured article.

David and I were both raised by moms who are educators helping to shape the minds of the next generation in vital ways. David’s mom was a teacher in the public school system for many years, and my mom has been a conflict resolution facilitator for both youth and adults through her decades-long work at the Topa Institute. David and I believe that the change and peace we all seek in the world starts with our kids valuing each other and the different cultures we all come from. To gather in a circle and hear each other’s histories and stories. If you’re looking for a way to support the efforts toward peace in this extremely painful and brutal time, please consider donating to Seeds of Peace, an organization that equips youth and educators from the Middle East to South Asia and beyond with the skills and relationships to work in solidarity across lines of difference to create more just and inclusive societies. Through their work, @SeedsOfPeace focuses on dialogue that shifts attitudes and perceptions in kids and builds respect and empathy for the next generation.
When we talk about wanting peace for all people, here is a very real way to begin.

A surreal day for me: I am honored to have a poem, “This Living,” published in print and online in the New Yorker this week, in one of their most historic issues (see last slide for the cover). It’s almost two full pages in print. I wish my mentors Jack Hirschman and Wanda Coleman were alive today to share this moment with me. I know they’d be wild proud. Thank you Kevin Young for choosing to publish this poem. To read it in full, click the link in my bio.
