Is God Good With Gay? As we head into Pride Month I want to be absolutely clear: YES, God is good with gay. And YES, our queer siblings are holy. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️❤️ We have to remember that the Bible is a historical and political text written through the lens of the culture of the time period it was written in. The six texts that seem to condemn queerness are no more relevant today than the texts that forbid us from eating pork– and I know MANY a Christian who is not ready to give up their barbecue ribs at the cookout 😉. We have to stop using outdated texts to justify hate and exclusion. Today I turn 65 🤗❤️🥳 I am grateful for every twist and turn along the way to this birthday. I celebrate the little girl inside me- the one who worried about being too shiny, who sometimes felt the need to make herself small—the overachiever who wanted to do ALL of the things and be the best, and who always had a strong moral compass and an insane drive for justice. At 65, I feel more”ME” than ever. I’m less afraid of messing up (because messing up is human), less afraid of taking up too much space (who does shrinking serve?), and MORE committed to creating a just world for everyone. I know myself enough to laugh at myself when my flaws—like my stubbornness (who me? 🫢), and my difficulty resting—rear their heads. Here’s to knowing the best is yet to come. I wouldn’t change a thing. Gender-affirming care is being banned across the US, abortions are being banned, trans children are being outed by their teachers and school counselors, our trans siblings are dying at an alarming rate, saying love is love is not enough. FIERCE LOVE, as our senior minister @revjacquilewis has told us, is through ACTION. It’s what we do and what we say. Democracy is broken. But we have the power to fix it. I don’t know what the end result of yesterday’s conviction will be or if we will or will not have a convict on the ballot. But I do know this: No matter what happens, we have GOT to be the ones to heal the world with love. All of the religions of the world have the calling to love your neighbor as themselves. Our broken politics, our broken country, our broken world? These are all a result of us not loving our neighbors, of not seeing their humanity, because truly we have forgotten to love ourselves. It starts with us. This is a sermon clip from a guest sermon I gave at @riversidenyc a couple of years ago. Grateful for the communities that work side by side with @middlechurch to create more space for love and healing in our broken world. Love is out here in abundance. We need to prioritize it and help it grow. We need to admit our complicitness in injustice and make it stop- now. We need to see the stranger as human AND stop idolizing money AND see all the children as OUR children. Tomorrow is too late. It starts with us.
