I love playing live so much it’s kinda stupid. And yet it’s still weirdly harrowing getting up on stage, doing that strange magic of singing in front of people, I know it could be just a fun night out, but the stakes always feel high. We’re only doing one show in Germany this summer, I don’t wanna miss Sandro growing up, I’m trying not to let the thought that we’re doing fewer gigs mean the machine isn’t as well oiled, I tell myself, every song I’ll be lucky enough to perform this summer will feel more vivid, more vibrant. Sometimes my whole being actually transforms through the act of singing. Doing the nursery run, holding his small soft body, his crazy toddler energy, getting the guitars ready, remembering the chords and words, that’s the mixture of life these days. 📸. davidddbentley

This is my working space now, in the past I’ve written in music studios, I’ve rented an office space, holed up at the @designmuseum library ( I dream of this library reopening! ) but now while Sandro is at nursery I’m re-learning to work from home.
This recording of the song ‘River’ you’re hearing is an original song by Ron Carey. I met Ron at the @arvon__ songwriting course, which I was part of with @fionasampson123. He was taking part in our songwriting retreat, and he wrote this song ‘River’ and asked me to play and record it just on my iPhone during one of our tutoring sessions. He said he had lots more in him. I found his industrious spirit inspiring and I was really moved by ‘River’. We were planning and hoping to finish the recording we started, but sadly that wasn’t to be. I heard from his son Michael recently that when he was younger he didn’t have the means to study music at university, but during his retirement he enrolled at @lancasteruni on a music degree. Ron, thank you for sharing your deep love of songs and music, for ‘River’ and for lighting the way in true style. R.I.P.
