You saw her miniature models, now check out the rest of Sarah Morris’s (@sarahmorris) studio. A space where no piece of her art history is ever thrown out (hint: they’re nicely sandwiched in yellow binders. Or pinned up on the cork board along with other memorabilia). The true engine of the studio is espresso. In a city that is rarely silent (props to whoever was driving by for their impeccable horn timing), Sarah Morris’s works begin from her walks through the streets. “Scouts” as she calls them. Then like an engineer laying out a mechanical plan, her ideas become dots and colors planes until they map out physical reality—spiderwebs and pinecones and all. If you are still in Basel and looking for a weekend activity, head to Bern for her retrospective “All Systems Fail” at Zentrum Paul Klee (@zentrumpaulklee).
Step inside Sarah Morris’s (@sarahmorris) studio — or rather the miniature models for her shows and site-specific installations. She takes us through a model for the retrospective “All Systems Fail” which is now on view at Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, only a short train from Basel. The exhibition features over 150 artworks, including a radio that she programmed to pick up police dispatches in 1992 (not featured in this video… but something we are looking forward to seeing in person!). Sun bleached or not, Morris keeps the scale models around as a reminder of the things exhibitions teach her. We have to admit — we love scale models too. It’s almost like getting to see an exhibition from a bird’s-eye view. Seeing how the paintings speak to each other and how the film rooms create the architecture and labyrinth of the show. Not in Switzerland? We have New Yorkers covered too. You can swing by the 39 Av-Dutch Kills station in Queens to see the glass platform she talks about at the end. “All Systems Fail” is on view at Zentrum Paul Klee (@zentrumpaulklee) through August 4, 2024.
