Jane Goodall - 859K Likes - With great sadness, the Jane Goodall Institute confirmed this morning the passing of the organization’s founder, Dr. Jane Goodall, age 91 who died peacefully in her sleep while in Los Angeles, CA for her speaking tour in the United States.

Dr. Goodall’s life and work not only made an indelible mark on our understanding of chimpanzees and other species, but also of humankind and the environments we all share. She inspired curiosity, hope and compassion in countless people around the world, and paved the way for many others — particularly young people who gave her hope for the future.

In 1960 Dr. Goodall established the longest running wild chimpanzee study in Gombe National Park, Tanzania which continues to this day. She pioneered and sustained the Jane Goodall Institute’s community-centered conservation initiatives across the chimpanzee range for over four decades. Her legacy includes the creation of JGI’s international environmental and humanitarian youth program Roots & Shoots, which is actively driving change in 75 countries and counting around the world.

Jane went on to change science with her observations that chimpanzees make and use tools. At the time, it wasn't just remarkable for a woman to be in the field, studying wild animals as they lived — this practice of patient observation was virtually unheard of until Jane blazed the trail.

Today, countless scientists and conservationists credit Jane for inspiring their work, including so many women who saw themselves in Jane. Any time someone approached Jane to thank her for paving the way, she would recall her mother's words and reflect on how they went on to touch so many lives. As we celebrate #InternationalWomensDay today, let's honor Jane, and Vanne, by remembering their strength, resilience, and imperative to never give up.

Like so many people around the world, I have been watching the destruction, disruption and even desolation caused by these fires. My heart has been pierced with distress – and I have felt helpless.

There have been fires before, people including friends have lost their homes, their everything. But not on the scale of these fires. The impact of climate change on people’s lives can no longer be denied.

I pray for all affected. It is small consolation if you have lost everything, but I want you to know I am thinking of you every minute of the day.

And I know that the whole JGI family, around the world, joins me in sending this message of concern.

It's true! Jane has often commented that chimpanzees are too similar to humans — complex, with both good and bad sides to them — for her to consider them her favorite animal. But dogs like Rusty (shown here) have been great teachers to Jane, showing the intelligence and empathy that other animals possess 💚

🐾 Dogs have a remarkable way of cheering us up! In fact, when asked what keeps her going through her busiest days in a 2019 interview with @fastcompany , Jane replied: “Precious moments when I can have a quick walk in nature. Jane Goodall - 23.9K Likes - You may recognize this extraordinary moment, when a chimpanzee named Wounda embraced Dr. Jane Goodall. 💚

What the world saw was a brief exchange of trust and gratitude. What came before it was years of care, compassion, and recovery.

When Wounda arrived at the Jane Goodall Institute’s Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in the Republic of the Congo, she was gravely ill. She was so weak her name in Lingala means “close to dying.” Like so many orphaned chimpanzees, she was rescued after her mother was killed in the illegal bushmeat trade.

Tchimpounga, founded by the Jane Goodall Institute in 1992, is now the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in Africa. It provides lifelong care to chimpanzees rescued from the illegal wildlife trade and serves as a model for conservation, education, and animal welfare across the region. The sanctuary includes a veterinary clinic, nursery, and expansive forest island habitats where rehabilitated chimpanzees can live freely and safely, forming new families and rediscovering what it means to be wild.

Under the dedicated care of Dr. Rebeca Atencia and her team, Wounda slowly regained her strength and spirit. When she was finally ready, she was transferred to one of these protected forested islands. She found a new home where she could roam, climb, and thrive among her kind.

As her transport crate opened, Wounda stepped out, looked back, and reached for Jane, offering an embrace that has since become a symbol of hope, resilience, and the profound connections we share with the other beings who call this planet home. 🌿💞

As Jane often shares, Gary initially thought he was giving her a chimpanzee plushy, until she had him feel that Mr. H had a tail (chimpanzees and other great apes don’t have tails, but monkeys do).

Jane was deeply inspired by Gary’s story, and so she decided to carry Mr. H as a symbol of the indomitable human spirit — one of her four main reasons for hope!
