Link in bio! 🙏🙏 MN STATE SENATOR CALLS PILOT A “STEWARDESS”👩✈️ Credit and thanks to @betches_news for finding this. Delta Airlines pilot Laura Haynor testified at a Minnesota State Senate Labor Committee meeting this month. She introduced herself as a pilot on behalf of the Air Line Pilots Association International, the largest union of pilots. And after all this pilot talk, State Senator Gene Dornink asked her what her typical work week looks like — “as a stewardess.” Haynor calmly corrected him, then Dornink apologized and said, “I don’t know why I said that.” (We have a guess.) Boy, I’ve certainly been there. Have you? We were trying to think of other professions for which people feel the need to qualify a woman in that role as a “female ____.” (E.g. female pilot, female doctor, etc.) In what other fields/roles do you see this happen?Likes : 107978

Caption : TAYLOR SWIFT ENDORSES VP KAMALA HARRIS @taylorswift today broke her silence on the presidential election, endorsing VP Kamala Harris. Here’s what Swift said in her endorsement: Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country. Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth. I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades. I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. I’ll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story. With love and hope, Taylor Swift Childless Cat LadyLikes : 31775

Caption : Good news for the Associated Press (and freedom of the press). A federal judge has ordered the White House must reinstate full access for AP to cover presidential events including on White House grounds. AP says this affirms “on First Amendment grounds that the government cannot punish the news organization for the content of its speech”. Trump banned AP from reporting in the White House press pool and at some limited press events, after the AP refused to call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. They’ve been blocked since February 11. Judge Trevor N. McFadden held off making his ruling immediate – giving time for the government to respond or appeal. It is worth noting Judge McFadden is an appointee of President Trump. The White House has taken steps to exert more control over who gets to cover Trump, including where reporters get to sit during press secretary briefings and interviews. The Trump administration has also taken an aggressive stance towards media – most recently, threatening funding for public broadcasters NPR and PBS. It’s worth noting: the @apnews kept up its thorough, fair and serious reporting even after they were booted from the pool.Likes : 26264

Caption : FRANCE PROTECTS ABORTION IN CONSTITUTION France became the first country to enshrine abortion access explicitly in its constitution. Legislators voted on a constitutional amendment recognizing abortion as a “guaranteed freedom.” This means future legislators won’t be able to “drastically modify” France’s standing abortion access laws. French PM Gabriel Attal said of the vote, “We are sending the message to all women: your body belongs to you and no one has the right to control it in your stead.” The push to add a constitutional amendment protecting abortion began as a direct result of SCOTUS overturning Roe v Wade in 2022.Likes : 23323

Caption : TAYLOR SWIFT VOTE.GOV Last night @TaylorSwift endorsed Kamala Harris and the frenzy over this news seemed to enrage and confuse some skeptics. They say no one cares about a pop star’s opinions. Or in the words of JD Vance, “I don’t think most Americans…are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity.” (Has he met his running mate?) The latest #s from vote.gov tell a different story via @npr. (In 2023 Taylor Swift got 23,000 voters registered on National Voting Day. And that wasn’t an election year. Let’s see how these #s change over time.) Check out the impact she’s had already. The latest #s via @npr.Likes : 22722

Caption : A stunning Oval Office confrontation today. Trump and VP Vance accused the Ukraine President of failing to show the US proper appreciation for its support in the war with Russia, repeatedly saying he didn’t appear thankful. Zelensky subsequently left the White House before a mineral deal was signed – the purpose for his visit. A planned presser was also canceled. Above is what Zelenskyy posted to X following the meeting. Trump also posted on Truth Social: “I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace…I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace”. It’s unclear where negotiations go from here.Likes : 22618

Caption : IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ANYONE WHO CARES ABOUT NEWS, TRUSTED INFO AND MY WORK Meta says they will stop recommending political content on instagram and threads. When you look more closely that language seems to apply to anyone who shares news – including about social justice, world events, elections, war and more. So to ensure you can still find me and my work: 1. Please sign up for my newsletter. Link in bio. 2. Please follow my new account @Resetrecenter 3. Please share this video 4. Please get informed about the platforms and algorithms Note that they’re doing this in an election year- ensuring fewer people get informed about the election. It’s a cheap and irresponsible way to try and limit disinformation on the platform – less info overall might mean less disinformation. Or it means bad actors with deep pockets will game the system, while responsible creators get muted. To be specific, IG says they won’t recommend accounts that share politics content. Meaning we won’t be on the discover page or reels discovery or in search. (But that seems to be the case already and for a while.) They also say people who already follow politics accounts will still get our content. But lived experience on the platform has taught me that any time they roll back discovery or search – you all start saying you also aren’t getting this content or are having a hard time finding me on the platform. IG also says they’ll soon let people opt in to getting politics- which means less informed folks remain targets for bad actors but can’t be reached by responsible creators. What are your thoughts? And do you have suggestions for building an informed community off of this platform?Likes : 22356

Caption : AP REPORT: HOSPITALS DENY EMERGENCY CARE TO PREGNANT WOMEN IN CRISIS We are sharing this today as the U.S. Supreme Court hears a case challenging a federal law, EMTLA. The law requires hospitals to treat patients in crisis – including those in need of abortion services. —— An astounding new @apnews article by Amanda Seitz reveals how harsh abortion bans have intimidated many hospitals and emergency rooms into denying emergency care to pregnant women in crisis. Seitz shares the stories of women who were denied care, who lost their pregnancy in stillbirth, and were forced to suffer needless pain and indignity because healthcare professionals feared prosecution under abortion bans. And the AP reports that since the overturn of Roe, there’s been a spike in complaints that pregnant women have been turned away from emergency rooms — even though federal law requires ERs to treat patients in critical condition and/or active labor. The federal law that requires that is the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act. EMTALA will go before SCOTUS Wednesday as the Biden administration argues that, under EMTALA, Idaho’s strict ban on abortion even in emergencies is illegal. Jennifer Klein, director of the White House Gender Policy Council @genderpolicycouncil46 said in a statement that “all patients, including women who are experiencing pregnancy-related emergencies, should have access to emergency medical care required” under EMTALA. If the Court sides with the Biden admin, Idaho (and other states) must provide abortion services for women in medical emergencies. If SCOTUS finds for Idaho, women in Idaho will have to go to different states to receive reproductive care including in acute emergencies when every minute they’re denied care could be life changing. Do you think people in your world are aware of the stakes here? Would they be surprised that the Dobbs ruling is putting basic care and women’s lives at risk like this? What is happening in your state to protect women? Please comment and share this.Likes : 19460

Caption : AZ STATE SEN ANNOUNCES ABORTION PLANS Arizona State Senator Eva Burch is a registered nurse and a mother to two boys. She says she is also pregnant with a nonviable pregnancy, not for the first time. She got up in front of her fellow Arizona lawmakers to share her story — including her plans to abort her current pregnancy. Burch, who worked for years as a nurse in women’s health clinics, said she thinks Arizona’s abortion laws “shame” women. AZ bans abortion at 15 weeks with no exceptions for rape or incest. Before the 15-week mark, by law pregnant people must undergo a transvaginal ultrasound, hear a list of “alternatives” to abortion (even when the pregnancy is nonviable), and wait 24 hours before getting an abortion. Burch called these requirements “cruel.” Burch also told a story about prior challenges accessing abortion care in 2022, before Roe was overturned. She said she began to miscarry a pregnancy she had wanted, and despite the miscarriage hospitals wouldn’t perform her abortion earlier than scheduled because she “wasn’t bleeding out.” She was able to get an abortion at a clinic the following day. Just 2 weeks later, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. Burch says she’s sharing her stories now not to justify her choices but to raise awareness of the impact laws have on real people. What do you think of her choice to share her story? Would you like to hear more lawmakers stories around their own pregnancies?Likes : 16815

Beyoncé is also one of only two women solo artists to debut singles at number 1 on the country charts (the other is Taylor Swift, naturally). And Beyoncé is the first woman to top both the country and R&B/hip-hop charts since they were established in 1958. Is there anything she can’t do? Both new singles are from her new album which drops in March. The new album’s title has yet to be released, but Beyoncé has referred to it as “Act II” of her 2022 album Renaissance.Likes : 16422

He was returning from the unveiling of a new dam on the border with East Azerbaijan. Iran’s foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and two other government officials were among those on the helicopter. Raisi’s death is being celebrated by Iranian ex-pats across the west and — as the video shows — by some brave Iranians inside the country as well. He was a cleric and served as a “judge” in 1988, condemning at least 5000 political prisoners to death. And that’s the tip of the iceberg of his gruesome despotic legacy. He was not the most senior leader in Iran. He reported to the Supreme Leader who is still in charge. But these multiple deaths will no doubt create instability when Iran is already under pressure. Caption : “COWBOY CARTER” WINS RAVES, SPARKS DISCUSSION @Beyoncé today released her album “Cowboy Carter,” her country music debut that’s already garnering rave reviews and prompting cultural conversations about race and genre. When Beyoncé first announced she would release a country album, some were surprised by the departure from her typical pop and R&B sound. Country, in particular, has long been associated with whiteness — and sometimes specifically with anti-Black racism. At the same time, many country artists have achieved mainstream success by pivoting away from country into pop, hip hop, and other genres with Black origins. But critics are pointing out that country music, like most American music, has its roots in Black music — early influences included the blues, gospel music, and of course, the ubiquitous banjo, descended from West African instruments. And in a world where white artists often achieve success by appropriating Black musical styles, Beyoncé’s choice to reclaim country music feels especially resonant. Of course, the 27-track “Cowboy Carter” isn’t your average country album. Covering the Beatles’ “Blackbird,” reimagining Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” interpolating the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations,” and even dipping into the 18th-century operatic aria “Caro Mio Ben,” Beyoncé broadens what country can be, with backup from established country legends and up-and-coming artists as well. The delegates’ online voting process doesn’t officially end until Monday, but Harris has now secured more than the 2,350 votes needed to become the nominee. Caption : NORTH DAKOTA STRIKES DOWN ABORTION BAN A North Dakota court just ruled the state’s total abortion ban unconstitutional, violating residents’ rights to health care autonomy and privacy. The Center for Reproductive Rights, which was a lead plaintiff in the suit that overturned the law, said the new ruling “means it is now much safer to be pregnant in North Dakota.” Judge Bruce Romanick wrote in his opinion that “The North Dakota Constitution guarantees each individual, including women, the fundamental right to make medical judgments affecting his or her bodily integrity, health, and autonomy, in consultation with a chosen health care provider free from government interference. This section necessarily and more specifically protects a woman’s right to procreative autonomy — including to seek and obtain a pre-viability abortion.” There are currently no abortion clinics in North Dakota, but this ruling means doctors at hospitals can provide patients emergency care without fear of prosecution and penalty. Does this ruling surprise you? Let us know in comments.Likes : 14699

Caption : A blow to the Trump administration’s deportation regime. In a 9-0 ruling the Supreme Court denied an emergency appeal and ordered the Trump administration to return a man who was taken from the US to that prison in El Salvador because of an “adminstrative error.” While the story is getting a lot of coverage from legacy media sources and sources on the left and center — very few sources on the right are even acknowledging it. Caption : Senate Considers Measure to Support Parents Today Sen JD Vance went to the border to campaign. While he was there his colleagues in the US Senate voted on the precisely the kind of pro-family legislation he says he supports. The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act contained a Child Tax Credit that would have made it easier for low income families to qualify for child tax credits. It also would have increased the single child tax credit from $1,600 per child to $1,900 in 2024 and $2,000 in 2025. It also would have made it inflation adjusted in future years. The non partisan Congressional Budget office said the measure would have cost roughly $33 billion, and would be paid for with other offsets so it would have had very little impact on the deficit. In both cases it favored the Trump Administration’s moves – in one instance allowing the government to continue forced removals. In the other allowing them to keep a man who was removed on an “administrative error” in jail. More details on why and what next in the video. Are you surprised by this?Likes : 12897

Caption : Huge props to @juliaboorstin and @secraimondo @cnbc #cnbcchangemakersfor putting this issue front and center. Hard to believe it needs this much explanation in 2024 but…it does. Here Gina Raimondo, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, pushed for CHIPS Act funding for semiconductor plants to be tied to plans from CEOs to provide employees access to child-care services. Raimondo said at CNBC’s inaugural Changemakers Summit on Thursday in New York that any person, politician, CEO or otherwise, who says child-care policy is social policy is “deeply misguided.” Jessica Chang, founder and CEO of Upwards, which provides access to child-care benefits and services to Amazon, the U.S. Army and other corporate and government clients, pointed in a separate Changemakers’ session to a recent Boston Consulting Group study that reports the return on investment from child care has been measured at between 90% and 425%. Note: she’s not saying businesses need to provide child care. Nor is this an economy wide mandate. Her dept is giving away billions to massive companies that make semiconductors, and she’s saying it you’re benefiting from all this public $$, your company needs to have plans in place that allow women workers to excel there too, Per CNBC: Raimondo, who is overseeing a Commerce Department budget that has ballooned from a historical average of $10 billion to $150 billion. Raimondo noted that half of Americans live in a “child care desert,” with not enough services available at a cost that is affordable. “I’m trying to raise my voice that this is a commercial issue, not just a women’s issue or social issue,” said Raimondo, who will host a Commerce Department child care summit in June. #cnbc #ginaraimondo #commerce #juliaboorstinLikes : 12379

Egg inflation has been a big driver of rising food costs. It accounted for nearly 2/3rds of last month’s food price increase according to the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics. Bird flu is largely to blame- fewer chickens means fewer eggs. Drought, high grain prices and interest rates are pushing record-high prices for meat products including ground beef and steak. Housing is another. The latest Consumer Price Index showed shelter inflation — a measure of the average cost of US housing — rose to 4.4% year-over-year in January. Caption : Members of the House Democratic Women’s Caucus wore suffragette white to symbolize their commitment to women’s rights and in particular reproductive rights. President Biden spent some time in his remarks on the Supreme Court’s ruling rolling back reproductive rights – and the political impact. President Biden said: “In its decision to overturn Roe v Wade, the supreme court majority wrote: ‘Women are not without electoral or political power.’ No kidding. Clearly, those bragging about overturning Roe v Wade have no clue about the power of women in America. They found out, though, when reproductive freedom was on the ballot and won in 2022, 2023, and they will find out again, in 2024. The President invited to the speech a woman who had to travel out of Texas to get an abortion when her health was in danger. Also in the chamber, another woman whose IVF procedure was put on hold in Alabama after the state supreme court put those who provide IVF services in danger of civil litigatin. It was a feisty speech overall. The President also challenged Republicans on tax policy (vowing to ensure billionaires never have a lower % tax than working Americans); and immigration (asking republicans to support the border security bill they once wanted) among other issues. The Democratic women’s caucus posted the following message on X: “For tonight’s State of the Union address, we’re in white and wearing ‘Fighting for Reproductive Freedom’ pins. Our message is clear: we won’t stop fighting until all women can access the health care they need to control their own lives and futures.”Likes : 11474

Caption : VP Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. The Governor is perhaps best known nationally for introducing the word “weird” to campaign vernacular, flipping the messaging on Trump and Vance. He is an accomplished Governor who has protected reproductive rights, expanded policies for parents and kids and taken action on a range of other progressive priorities including health care as governor. At 60, he is just a smidge older than Harris but with his gray hair he looks significantly older. He could provide the so-called “permission structure” that might help some Americans get comfortable voting for the first female, and first Black and South Asian woman for president. His choice has been hailed by everyone from the Obamas to Bernie Sanders. Conservatives are already on the attack. Caption : This is such a clear example of the saying a lie travels further than the truth. But that’s not a reflection of human nature. It’s a product of the algorithm that pushes panicking rage baiting content to far far far more people than factual news. So when META says they’re ending fact checking – that’s just part of the problem here. (They barely did fact checking anyway.) There is so much misinformation about the fires. Lots of you ask me – do these people think their info is accurate or are they spreading it maliciously? I don’t know this guy so I can’t speak to his state of mind but this is a full on lie that will panic people, make them feel abandoned by their government – and it serves two purposes: to try to undercut California’s democratic officials and environmental standards based on lies (there are plenty of legit reasons to take issue with the official response to the wildfires). AND to gain this guy followers. He’s no better than a scammer who manipulates fire victims for his own gain. If videos like this keep getting more support than factual videos, where will you turn for factual information? (And is this how social media dies?). Share your thoughts in comments. Caption : SCHOOL SHOOTER’S PARENT GUILTY OF INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER A Michigan jury finds Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of a school shooter, guilty of four counts of involuntary manslaughter. It took just 10 hours for the jury to reach this verdict. It is the first time in US history a parent has been convicted for the shooting crimes of a child. Crumbley could be sentenced to as many as 15 years in prison. Her son shot and killed 4 and wounded 6 others at Oxford HIgh School in 2021. He had exhibited worrying signs of violent inclinations, but his parents still bought him a gun and failed to tell the school about it while discussing his behavior (He’d drawn a graphic picture of a shooting.) The prosecution said that his parents could have prevented the shooting by taking “just the smallest steps.” Defense attorneys blamed the shooter’s father, the school, and the shooter for the crime and warned that finding the mother guilty would make parents liable for all manner of actions by their kids. The shooter’s father, is also charged with involuntary manslaughter and will stand trial separately. Do you think parents of school shooters should face criminal charges? If so do you think this will help prevent other shootings or do you see it, instead, as purely about punishing the parents?Likes : 10984

But this is getting a lot of oxygen and it could spiral into something larger. So we figure we should give you the basics now. MAGA stars Rep. Caption : U.S. TO REQUIRE CONSENT FOR PELVIC EXAMS, 4 YEARS AFTER SCANDAL REVEALED The US government says hospitals now need written consent to perform vaginal exams or risk losing Medicare funding. This, after a @nytimes investigation found that some teaching hospitals were conducting medically unnecessary pelvic exams on sedated patients without consent. And it’s been happening for years. The Department of Health and Human Services @hhsgov is cracking down four years after the investigation was published in 2020. Backstory: Medical students at teaching hospitals learn from observing doctors and by practicing procedures themselves. In service of this education, some healthcare workers have conducted pelvic exams at hospitals without patients’ consent or knowledge, while the patients are sedated for other procedures. These extremely invasive exams involve doctors inserting their hands into patients’ genitals. The exams can also cause lingering discomfort and pain if conducted when a patient isn’t conscious and able to say when something hurts. It should be obvious that a pelvic exam without consent is a violation, but this practice has been normalized in many healthcare environments. HHS has now established guidelines to ensure hospitals comply with their rule and obtain consent for these procedures. We will link to an article in stories so you can read more details. If. you’re finding this post long after our story has expired — google “She Didn’t Want a Pelvic Exam. She Received One Anyway” by the New York Times. Have you ever felt you were violated by a professional in the medical setting? Does this practice surprise you? #womenshealth #mybody #mybodymyrules #consent #consentmattersLikes : 10332

Caption : ALABAMA V IN-VITRO FERTILIZATION After the Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, many fertility doctors and advocates sounded the alarm that the next target could be in-vitro fertilization. Now, Alabama is realizing those fears. The Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen IVF embryos are legally “children,” citing the Bible in its ruling. Apparently, life begins at conception – even if conception occurs in a Petri dish. The legal implications of this ruling are many and chilling. We don’t know yet what this means for families in Alabama who currently have frozen embryos stored in the state’s five fertility clinics, but beyond that — this is a worrying precedent to set in any state. Other states decide to adopt similar measures, throwing into doubt the future of IVF for many who need it.Likes : 9912

So many of you are outraged that @caitlinclark22 electrified the public, set new records for college ball – for both men and women – and helped drive the season to record high ratings. She was just the number one @wnba draft pick (going to the @indianafever) but she’s getting paid a paltry sum. Only $76,000 her first year. Tons of you are outraged by this. You asked how could this be? We did the research and have some answers. It’s a bad news-good news scenario. As in things have been bad, but they seem to be getting better. And whether they get much better depends on you and me. Check out the reel for details. What do you think? If you don’t already, will you start paying to see women’s sports? PS @deloitte predicts women’s elite sports revenue will top $1 billion dollars worldwide for the first time this year. And women are expected to earn more sponsorships at higher rates. And of course Clark is expected to make much more than $76k on sponsorships, and other deals. A New York jury found him guilty on all 34 felony charges for falsifying business records to covered up hush money payments before the 2020 election. Sentencing will occur July 11, four days before he becomes the GOP nominee at the Republican National Convention. Trump could face a maximum of four years in prison and/or pay a steep fine. After the trial, Trump called the trial “rigged” and a “disgrace” and said the “real verdict” will come on Election Day. He also alleged without evidence that the trial is a form of election interference. Trump is expected to appeal the verdict. This is a developing story check stories for more. Caption : There has been a lot of back and forth about the fire department budget. The department was funded at almost $18m less than the prior year. But the Mayor’s office says that budget was increased after contract negotiations resolved in November. On the other hand, a memo from the LA Fire Chief written months ago says the department is underfunded and needs moreresources. Speaking to @foxla today, the Chief of the LA Fire Department says the city needs more than 60 additional fire houses, more than double the number of fire fighters to address the call volume and a population the size of Los Angeles. She says the City’s failure to provide those resources left the department unable to do its job. She said that she has been sounding an alarm about this for 3 years. And the city has failed the department. More in tonight’s newsletter. Sign up at the link in bio.Likes : 9008

Caption : MEXICO SET TO ELECT FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT Both leading candidates in Mexico’s presidential race are women, meaning the country is poised to elect its first woman president this Sunday, June 2. The current frontrunner is Claudia Sheinbaum, a former governor of Mexico City and a protégée of current President López Obrador. She is a scientist by training with a PhD in energy engineering and has written extensively on sustainable development and climate change. If elected, she would also be Mexico’s first Jewish president. The other top contender, Xóchitl Gálvez, is a fierce critic of López Obrador. Gálvez is a senator and computer engineer who also previously directed the National Institute for Indigenous Peoples. A third (male) candidate, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, is also vying for the presidency but polling behind Sheinbaum and Gálvez.Likes : 8742

Caption : HUMAN MOMENTS OR UNACCEPTABLE IN LEADERS? A House Oversight Committee meeting on whether to hold AG Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress descended into chaos spurred by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s comment on Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s appearance. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez demanded Greene apologize (she refused), and Crockett clapped back with her own attack on Greene’s appearance. This fight struck us because it is just so unusual to see in Congress (well, except a few months ago when Sen. Markwayne Mullin challenged the president of the Teamsters to a fistfight on the Senate floor). It is what we see on social media these days and increasingly in protests and even in our own disagreements. So many of us find it increasingly impossible to disagree without getting hostile and worse. When it’s modeled in the halls of government and by our elected leaders that sets off alarm bells for me. I wonder – what do you think of this? Is it a sign that something is wrong with how we interact or just human moments? If the former what can and should our leaders do to shift and represent differently? Or are there times when provocateurs (MTG) require call outs and and forced boundaries? How would you explain this moment to a child you’re teaching to fight with ideas not personal attacks? Or how do you retain your calm when provoked in moments like this? Please share your thoughts.Likes : 8358

Caption : NYTIMES INSTAGRAM Check this out. The @nytimes is up with a piece on Instagram becoming a home for news! We agree Instagram has a troubled relationship with news and news providers (or maybe we should say a troubling relationship….) Thank you to @whatsupna and @mike_isaac for featuring News Not Noise. When we started News Not Noise in 2018, I only knew of one account posting news on Instagram — a Texas reporter with the account @smarthernews whose name I’ve sadly forgotten. At the time there was no other national journalist doing this. It was before reels existed and before TikTok videos were a thing. We took a big leap, started sharing news this way and proved there is an audience on Instagram hungry for fact-based information, curated and told clearly from a friendly voice. That paved the way for so many others to follow. I’m honored to be mentioned alongside news creators @mosheh @sharonsaysso and @emilyinyourphone in this article. Our work requires innovation, creativity, and constant adaptation. We are so glad we’ve proven that this model works, and we couldn’t have done it without you showing up every day, confirming that people do want to be part of a community that cares about being informed. That cares about facts, expertise, and our impact on the world. This is more important than ever in an election year. And Instagram is increasingly making it difficult to reach an audience. So to help us stay strong and reach new people — I’m making a request of everyone. If you care about the work we do to bring you calm, fact-based news even as the IG algorithm suppresses it: ⭐️ Please send this account to 3 friends who don’t follow us and ask them to follow. (You could send it to more than 3 if you’d like 😊) And you can read the NYT article at the link in stories & bio. Thanks for making this such a fantastic community! Photo by @elizabethrweinberg So I don’t usually do this but this was a special occasion. So: Thank you @mishelbrownbeauty for such pretty makeup and @coryaaronscott for always making my hair glow. #gratitude #creativity #innovationLikes : 7993

Caption : TEENS & PHONES/SOCIAL MEDIA Jonathan Haidt (@jonathanhaidt), NYU social psychologist and author of “The Anxious Generation,” says kids shouldn’t have smartphones. He argues that Gen Z’s mental health has been damaged by social media and smartphones, which he calls “the Great Rewiring of Childhood.” One path forward he suggests: creating new social norms around phone use and social media use, including waiting until high school to give kids smartphones. Today Florida took a step towards something similar. Gov. Ron DeSantis just signed a law banning Florida kids under 14 from having social media accounts, and requiring parental consent for minors under 16 to create social media accounts. (The law also requires websites that host adult content to verify the age of users, possibly by uploading photo IDs.) What do you think about all this? Should kids have phones and social media before high school? Whose job is it to protect kids online? Tell us your thoughts in comments. And “The Anxious Generation” is available tomorrow, March 26, wherever books are sold. 🎥 via Joe Rogan ExperienceLikes : 7940

Caption : Richard Serra, one of the most celebrated sculptors of the modern era died today. He was 85. The New York Times reports he died of pneumonia. I remember tagging along as my parents drove to see – or rather experience – Serra’s sculptures. Sometimes much to my frustration, my parents would drive an hour out of our way to visit a Serra installation. (My parents really liked art.) Spending time with a Serra sculpture is a visceral experience. They are massive works that take up space and allow you to experience awe, endless perspective shifts, and sometimes a little anxiety as you move through them (they’re made of rough hulking metal, sometimes pitched at an angle with no visible screws or means of support). Serra’s work gained attention in the 1960s and acclaim in the 1970s and 1980s. In a @nytimes obituary for Serra, Roberta Smith describes his work this way: “Mr. Serra’s most celebrated works had some of the scale of ancient temples or sacred sites and the inscrutability of landmarks like Stonehenge. But if these massive forms had a mystical effect, it came not from religious belief but from the distortions of space created by their leaning, curving or circling walls and the frankness of their materials. This was something new in sculpture; a flowing, circling geometry that had to be moved through and around to be fully experienced. Mr. Serra said his work required a lot of “walking and looking,” or “peripatetic perception.” It was, he said, “viewer centered”: Its meanings were to be arrived at by individual exploration and reflection. For anyone questioning why I’m posting on this: culture is news. It’s worth pausing to recognize the creative minds that recast what we consider beautiful and allow us to experience awe. Caption : FIRST TRADITIONAL PRESS INTERVIEW AS NOMINEE VP Kamala Harris has agreed to sit down for a traditional press interview alongside nominee Gov Tim Walz – and they’ll do it with @cnn’s @danabashcnn . The political press has been clamoring for an opportunity to interview Harris ever since she entered the race. This will be her first as the nominee. The interview comes as the traditional media finds itself at odds with other media personalities who are getting more access to the candidates — especially content creators who tend to promote the campaign’s messages online. Whatever knocks you have against the DC press, a sit-down like this has advantages for voters. Serious reporters who cover Washington talk to experts and electeds on all sides. They have historic knowledge of institutions and a memory for what policy has been attempted before; they also understand where the votes are and therefore can engage candidates on questions including: can this get passed? What are the costs and unintended consequences? A sit down like this allows voters to hear the candidates speak on topics that matter but which the campaign might not have addressed and it’s a way to pressure test the candidates — to assess their readiness for the rough and tumble of DC politics — and their ideas. As a matter of strategy, there are obvious downsides to an interview: if the candidates stumble badly that provides material the opposition can use to its advantage. On the other hand, refusing to do an interiew would become an issue on its own. And Harris said she’d grant one this month — so failing to do so would become a big THING. A note on Dana Bash: she is a serious, substantive reporter who has covered multiple presidential campaigns as well as Capitol Hill for years. I worked alongside her and can attest that she knows more about what’s happening in DC than many members of Congress. I’m personally delighted to see that the campaign granted this interview to a woman reporter. I can’t tell you how rare that is. You can tune in to see the interview Thursday night on CNN.Likes : 7224
