NORTH DAKOTA STRIKES DOWN ABORTION BAN A North Dakota court just ruled the state’s total abortion ban unconstitutional, violating residents’ rights to health care autonomy and privacy. The Center for Reproductive Rights, which was a lead plaintiff in the suit that overturned the law, said the new ruling “means it is now much safer to be pregnant in North Dakota.” Judge Bruce Romanick wrote in his opinion that “The North Dakota Constitution guarantees each individual, including women, the fundamental right to make medical judgments affecting his or her bodily integrity, health, and autonomy, in consultation with a chosen health care provider free from government interference. This section necessarily and more specifically protects a woman’s right to procreative autonomy — including to seek and obtain a pre-viability abortion.” There are currently no abortion clinics in North Dakota, but this ruling means doctors at hospitals can provide patients emergency care without fear of prosecution and penalty. There has been a lot of back and forth about the fire department budget. The department was funded at almost $18m less than the prior year. But the Mayor’s office says that budget was increased after contract negotiations resolved in November. On the other hand, a memo from the LA Fire Chief written months ago says the department is underfunded and needs moreresources. Speaking to @foxla today, the Chief of the LA Fire Department says the city needs more than 60 additional fire houses, more than double the number of fire fighters to address the call volume and a population the size of Los Angeles. She says the City’s failure to provide those resources left the department unable to do its job. She said that she has been sounding an alarm about this for 3 years. Small fires are cropping up all over LA county. There are posts on social media from residents claiming they’ve seen arsonists setting fires. This is the first time LA law enforcement confirmed at least one fire is suspected to be started intentionally. The Kenneth Fire has burned 1000 acres and is not contained, though the LAFD says they’ve halted its forward progression for now. There are reports from Angelenos theat they’ve spotted individuals trying to set fire to houses in their community; that gangs are setting fires to can force evacuations so they can rob the homes in the area. Those reports are not confirmed. What have you heard and seen?

Fighting the fires: 14,000 Personnel 🪖 1,680 @TheCalGuard Members 🚒 1,668 Fire Engines, Water Tenders, & Dozers 🚁 71 Helicopters The state also says California airborne fire teams are dropping 3,000 gallons—28,000 pounds—of fire retardant on the #PalisadesFire. Each drop covers a quarter-mile stretch at 60 feet wide! Refill airborne in under 20 minutes. @CAgovernor @POTUS @USNorthernCmd @yourpswforests @USNationalGuard @Cal_OES @CAL_FIRE And 72 fire fighters from Mexico have also joined the efforts and are fighting the fire alongside US personnel. Canada has also sent multiple water scooping planes to fight the fires as well.
