Our kids are so much stronger than they often know. But figuring out how to show them what they are capable of can be a complex puzzle. How hard should we push them outside of there comfort zone? Will we end up making them hate the outdoors if we push it too hard? Becca and I haven’t always gotten it right. But this trip has been a break through. Every kid and family are different. But here are some things that seem to be working for us these days. 1: Team up with friends that have similar values, interests and physical abilities. 2: Avoid screens. Certainly don’t give your kids a smartphone until they are much older. I’m hoping college. 3: Celebrate working hard. And be empathetic when they are struggling. Avoid using guilt. (I fall short here sometimes) 4: Traveling seems to break bad patterns and bring fun in the form of newness. I think we are all more moldable when we travel. 5: Focus on fun. Kids naturally have a superpower when it comes to joy. Make sure to harness this. 6: Find a life partner like @beccajcaldwell. Becca is the most intentional, joyful and intelligent mom I have ever known. You just have to look into the eyes of our kids to see it.
I’m still buzzing from my first rock climbing trip I’m over a year! Doc still says I should avoid jumping down into my healing achilles so I took the somewhat lame opportunity to top rope some proud highballs, which unsurprisingly made them feel easier than their grade. Despite that I’m relatively satisfied with my climbing. The real magic of the trip was the simple joy of being out in the forest with family and great friends all day every day. Most years since becoming parents Becca and I have made the spring trip to Fontainebleau. It’s great to jumpstart summer fitness. And better for family adventuring.

We were expecting more of a climbing trip. But since my partner couldn’t come we have focused more on family romping. In truth, couldn’t be happier. It’s hard to imagine a better place than the Dolomites for a family to play in the mountains. Thanks @sandy.russellc for being a key part of the family scene on this trip!

I have lived a lot of life and seen a lot of things. But the best decision I made was to marry this incredible woman 14 years ago. Happy anniversary love. After all these years I’m still blown away by the joy you spread. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

One of the things I find most AWEsome about National Forests is how they shape my kids. They have been raised in the dirt. They love finding bugs and sleeping under the stars and exploring the American west. The National Forest Foundation works to ensure that everyone gets these opportunities. Let’s celebrate these special places that continue to shape our next generation during National Forest Week™ – July 8-14. Find out more:
I had a chance to put the new COROS VIRTEX 2S with vertical gps mode through the wringer last week on the Incredible Hulk. I was originally skeptical about data tracking for rock climbing. Over the years Coros has made it super useful and fun. Here is a little rundown of the features I liked and how I used them. When I woke up at 5 am I was able to check how much I managed to sleep. At the trailhead I hit the Outdoor climb mode and the watch tracked the approach the same way that it would a hike. I monitored heart rate, elevation gain, altitude gain, and time for the roughly 3 hr approach. At the base of the route I hit the button to change to “climb” mode. This allows me to log pitches and monitor all my stats while climbing. I also switched the watch into the climbing locking carabiner and attached it to the back of my harness. When we started descending I forgot to switch to descend mode. The watch figured it out for me. I had only been to the incredible hulk once before. What seemed like relatively straight forward approach in the daylight turned into a bit of a mystery on the way out in the dark. While still in outdoor climb mode I was able to load the map and follow our approach line back to the car with ease. The 12 hr day of tracking used less than 20 percent of the battery. I was also impressed with how the screen seems totally scratch proof, even after dragging it through some chimneys. #trainwithcoros

🎙️This one will get you psyched to grab a friend and go on an adventure! @tommycaldwell shares the inspiring, hilarious, and epic time that he and @alexhonnold had as they biked from Colorado to Alaska, climbing along the way, and culminating with a rare sea-to-summit ascent of the Devil’s Thumb. So mega! Check out The Struggle Climbing Show on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you pod. Will also be up on YouTube in a few days. Who’s the Alex to your Tommy? Our @nationalforests are so much wilder and more diverse than most of us can imagine. Last summer in Tongass National Forest in Alaska I had the adventure of a lifetime with some of my best friends. We witnessed groups of whales hunting, rivers so full of salmon you could reach in and grab one, 5000 foot rock spires surrounded by the rumbling and crashing of moving glaciers. These examples just scratch the surface of what we witnessed on our journey to climb the Devil’s Thumb. Not all our wild places are far from home and our National Forests might be out your back door. National Forest week is coming up – get out and explore, give back at a local event, and take advantage of @nationalforests photo and video contest where you can win tons of awesome outdoor gear and experiences. How climbers care for Bears Ears—and involve its original stewards—matters now more than ever. For nearly a decade, we’ve joined Indigenous tribes (@bearsearscoalition), environmental leaders and the outdoor community in the ongoing fight to preserve Bears Ears and the surrounding landscape as a nationally protected monument. Now, we have a historic opportunity to call on President Biden to approve the first-ever national monument management plan informed by a coalition of Tribal Nations. The plan (Alternative E) prioritizes recreational access to magnificent sites across Bears Ears like the Creek, while incorporating Traditional Indigenous Knowledge into land management practices. This approach is integral to the sustainable conservation of long-celebrated places like Bears Ears. Learn more, join us and act today: Submit a comment by June 11. Link in bio.
