Dina Deleasa Instagram – Core Memory Remembered: Leftover Pizza Dough Zeppoles with Grandma
The other day we skipped our after school activity and just ended up going with the flow. I usually do not let her miss a practice or dance class unless she is sick. She did have an injured toe that she had been playing on, but we decided a break was in order. Brian wasn’t going to be home for dinner that night. She pulled up her stool to the counter and we made some pizza. I purposely left some dough behind to make zeppoles. Just as my grandma did many nights when I was younger. Somehow she always had a little dough left over that she would fry off quickly. Most nights she sprinkled granulated sugar over the top as they left the frying pan. Siena and I did the same, although Siena’s sprinkle was more of a handful dumped, but we are learning, haha!
My grandma’s kitchen was always dimly lit, because it was after dinner. The Golden Girls would be playing on the TV, my mom would be helping to clean up the last of the dinner plates. I would wait at the table patiently for that first warm, chewy, sugary bite. And that is exactly what I was able to create on this most recent night. When we decided it was okay to take a break, and not stick to the plan. To bend the weeknight rules a bit. It was such a bittersweet moment because it had been awhile since I had moved about my kitchen in that old familiar way. Feeling purposeful and at peace .
Now I think of this as summer approaches and I am concerned about the schedule. How will I make it all work? I realize I may be better off taking serious inventory of what that “all” truly is. Consider that the list of expectations may need an edit. In order to leave more room for these times of togetherness to happen, rather than “busyness.”
