Jewel Instagram - #Foolishgames was written when I was 18 or so. I was trying to conjure the same cinematic angst as Leonard Cohens The Famous Blue Raincoat. I was also heavily influenced by Pablo Neruda and his use of color and texture. I shot the video with the incredible @matthewrolstonstudio I will release the second half of the song next! I wanted artistic freedom, so I bought it by refusing the record label’s money. And then I went on to fail. A lot. I could write a book about the rejections and the “shock jocks” who asked me, “How can you give a bj with those teeth?” I walked out of stations, told people to f off, and my label just shook their heads because I refused to eat 💩 The album failed for so long that I started making a second one. In the middle of recording, Bob Dylan asked me to tour with him. So I told the band I’d be back in the studio soon and went on the road with Bob. He believed in me. He watched my shows. He went over my lyrics with me. He invited me to sing with him. He told me to keep going with Pieces of You. So I did. Then Neil Young took me out on tour. He believed in me. He told me to keep going. So I did. And slowly, things began to take off. You guys connected with the music. You called radio stations for me and created a groundswell online. My fans and I are credited as being one of the first acts to harness the internet to break an album, forcing mainstream radio to pay attention. That little album—5,500 words—changed the course of my life forever. Thank you all.

Jewel Instagram - Yep. Went grey OVERNIGHT when I was 21 or so. I have had FBI , FTA and many local authorities all across America called to my home, hotel or venue for men w guns or knives or suitcases w explosives or their very own cult coming for me, threatening me, firebombing, kidnapping - all in the name of “loving” me. I have been cussed, berated, grabbed and humiliated in public because men did not think I was “nice” enough in a moment and they got angry. What I went through isn’t uncommon. It did cause me to step back from my career because - who wouldn’t?! Safety for women needs to be ALL the time - even if that woman is famous. Even if she isn’t. Even if she is wearing a mini skirt. I’m so grateful my true fans have always been so respectful, and way back in the 90’s when no one was talking about trauma, my fans respected my need not to be touched or rushed up on. To help me hold up a mirror to prejudice. The song intentionally uses harsh language—sexism, homophobia, antisemitism, bullying—because I wanted listeners to hear the kinds of things people actually say to each other, and to confront how fear and judgment get projected onto others. At the heart of the song is a question I was wrestling with: Why do we sometimes hate people who reflect parts of ourselves? Why do we reject in others the very pieces of ourselves we haven’t learned to accept or understand yet. I’m curious- what did you think when you first heard this song?

Jewel Instagram - 5 days until Christmas! 🎄✨ Here’s a little throwback to my 1999 performance of “Oh Holy Night” on PBS’s Sessions at West 54th. The legendary Arif Mardin produced this album…he was a hero of mine, as he produced for Donny Hathaway, Streisand, Chaka Khan, and the Bee Gees. He was an absolute beast—a credible composer and arranger, and an incredible old-school gentleman. He was a house producer for Atlantic, my label at the time. Please look up his work, and in the meantime, go listen to Donny Hathaway sing “A Song For You”—it’s a masterpiece.

Being snarky in the comment section or humiliating others for not agreeing or not knowing as much as you think you know does not make you an activist the most radical form of activism is nurturing light- growing consciousness - activating peace . It’s hard work. That’s why so few do it. Peace is an active principle - not passive. It requires being consistently: cooperative, listening, Practicing tolerance of varying view points, Generosity, Being uncomfortable, Seeing where you can meet How many of those can you say you do? How many can I say I do? We should not claim to want peace if we can not act in this way If all we do is try to eliminate what we can’t find peace with- it is not peace, It’s abuse. Amd it’s no better than what’s happening abroad. Power OVER is abuse. Power WITH is creation. That is the heart of the problem as I see it. Here is to power with. Here is to heart. Here is to practicing the active principles of peace in a small way- here together, and knowing it’s not enough, but at least it’s a ripple in the ocean in which we ALL move and exist and have our being. I have had FBI , FTA and many local authorities all across America called to my home, hotel or venue for men w guns or knives or suitcases w explosives or their very own cult coming for me, threatening me, firebombing, kidnapping - all in the name of “loving” me. I have been cussed, berated, grabbed and humiliated in public because men did not think I was “nice” enough in a moment and they got angry. What I went through isn’t uncommon. It did cause me to step back from my career because - who wouldn’t?! Safety for women needs to be ALL the time - even if that woman is famous. Even if she isn’t. Even if she is wearing a mini skirt. I’m so grateful my true fans have always been so respectful, and way back in the 90’s when no one was talking about trauma, my fans respected my need not to be touched or rushed up on. The legendary Arif Mardin produced this album…he was a hero of mine, as he produced for Donny Hathaway, Streisand, Chaka Khan, and the Bee Gees. He was an absolute beast—a credible composer and arranger, and an incredible old-school gentleman. He was a house producer for Atlantic, my label at the time.
