Yep. Went grey OVERNIGHT when I was 21 or so. I have had FBI , FTA and many local authorities all across America called to my home, hotel or venue for men w guns or knives or suitcases w explosives or their very own cult coming for me, threatening me, firebombing, kidnapping – all in the name of “loving” me. I have been cussed, berated, grabbed and humiliated in public because men did not think I was “nice” enough in a moment and they got angry. What I went through isn’t uncommon. It did cause me to step back from my career because – who wouldn’t?! Safety for women needs to be ALL the time – even if that woman is famous. Even if she isn’t. Even if she is wearing a mini skirt. I’m so grateful my true fans have always been so respectful, and way back in the 90’s when no one was talking about trauma, my fans respected my need not to be touched or rushed up on. 5 days until Christmas! 🎄✨ Here’s a little throwback to my 1999 performance of “Oh Holy Night” on PBS’s Sessions at West 54th. The legendary Arif Mardin produced this album…he was a hero of mine, as he produced for Donny Hathaway, Streisand, Chaka Khan, and the Bee Gees. He was an absolute beast—a credible composer and arranger, and an incredible old-school gentleman. He was a house producer for Atlantic, my label at the time. Please look up his work, and in the meantime, go listen to Donny Hathaway sing “A Song For You”—it’s a masterpiece.

Oil painting has been a very rewarding part of my art practice. It’s very calming and meditative. It requires so much focus and endlessly difficult. Capturing light on form with color is my favorite part … just like w music I have always lived around genres so I can keep learning – and MJ visual art practice is the same. I know with painting I will branch out into other styles like abstract , but for now this is where I am loving what I am learning. Amd it’s a nice change from the sculpture I am working on which is such a different process! What should I call it?! Excited to put a team together to help me bring this to life … I’m thinking open data and open science , data analyst , oceanographer, engineers, programmers, music producers to help me w sounds, maybe a media lab at a university, someone to cast the physical body… it’s gna be a big team to make this happen!! Not to mention I need to find a venue and a place to show this! Who became one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time. Who is now taking on the shoe industry by absolutely restructuring the high heel with better weight distribution. Insisting women can be comfortable and cared for and cute AF. @sneex !! Sara! I swear the guitar is going to be in the mail!! Tomorrow! Or … maybe I will write a little more on it … but definitly soon!

I adore Venice … it’s one of those cities that just speaks to me. The first time I went it was was when I was 20 or so. I was just getting started and my Sean took me over there for the Venice Film Festival. (You’d have to read my autobiography for the full story I guess.) It was part of my heart instantly- and it’s been in my heart ever since. Do you all have a city that felt instantly like home and part of you?
Today we remember the lives lost – the mothers brothers sisters fathers … today we remember those who gave their lives fighting for to save our loved ones, and our way of life. I wrote this song for my father , who so also a vet… Hug your loved ones extra big today & everyday.

Slowly coming into focus … what would it be like to create a totemic goddess like form … 8 feet tall? … that can be a living embodiment for the Ocean… letting her speak to us through her wave patterns, storm patterns, her depth and temperature ?
