Meaghan Rath Instagram - I’m not sure who needs to hear this, but I think it would have helped me. So. I had a very early miscarriage. While I sit here trying to sort through and process my own grief, I can’t help but think about all the women (and their partners) who have gone through this very thing. The cocktail of emotions continues to intoxicate me- I’m grateful for my body knowing what to do, I’m devastated to say goodbye to something I already loved. I focus on how lucky I am to have all the happiness I do in my life, but then I remember. What’s brought me a lot of peace is finding that the more I talk about it, the more these same experiences are echoed back to me. Every single person I share this with has a story of it either happening to them, or to someone they are close to. Pregnancy loss is so much more common than I ever realized. Why don’t we know this? Wouldn’t it be easier to know that miscarriages are so common they are almost part of the process of trying to conceive? I can’t write this without acknowledging how gobsmacked and inspired I was by @chrissyteigen ‘s bravery when she shared her miscarriage with the world in such a raw and honest way, a way we so rarely see. I am in awe of that kind of openness. So in the interest of normalizing this very difficult thing, I’d like to let you know you that are very much not alone. Though my loss was so early and considered a chemical pregnancy, I’m overwhelmed by the amount of heartbreak I feel. I just want to take a moment and send out so much love and compassion to anyone who is going through this - or has, or will. As I struggle to heal after only a few weeks, I can’t even imagine what it must feel like to miscarry at a later stage, to experience a stillbirth, to lose a grown child. Sending so much peace to anyone who is in pain, no matter what the stage.

Meaghan Rath Instagram - When I was 17, I started treatment for an eating disorder. The decision to do so wasn’t mine - it was one that was made for me by the closest people in my life. I wasn’t at the point where help was what I wanted. I was so deep underwater, in a dark reality I had fully accepted: that being isolated, withdrawn, a shell of the person I was, was what my life now looked like. I felt protected by the walls I’d built around me, a slave to laws of my own invention. I have vivid memories of the genuine confusion I felt looking in the mirror and seeing nothing at all. No Meaghan, no woman, no human, no ‘me’. Just a something. A shapeless form holding up a head. I had erased any feelings other than this. My ED was all I had. I am so proud of what I overcame. And yet, for years, the pride I felt was drowned out by shame. It took me a really long time to sort through why I wasn’t celebrating my recovery- why one of my biggest accomplishments still felt like something I wasn’t supposed to talk about. Why I still felt embarrassed about this life that I fought for with more determination and grit than I even knew I had. I navigated my way out of a world of secrets only to continue to keep them just as closely after I escaped. In fact, while this part of my story is something I’m now very open about in my personal life, this is the first time I’ve ever shared it publicly. My treatment saved my life. 20 years later, I still can’t believe what it did for me. How fortunate I was that I had access to the care I needed. And so many don’t. In the US, 30 million ppl are suffering with an ED. Despite this prevalence, less than 20% ever receive treatment. Project HEAL aims to breakdown systemic, healthcare & financial barriers to ED healing so that those who are suffering have access to the treatment that they deserve. While I sit here trying to sort through and process my own grief, I can’t help but think about all the women (and their partners) who have gone through this very thing. The cocktail of emotions continues to intoxicate me- I’m grateful for my body knowing what to do, I’m devastated to say goodbye to something I already loved. I focus on how lucky I am to have all the happiness I do in my life, but then I remember. What’s brought me a lot of peace is finding that the more I talk about it, the more these same experiences are echoed back to me. Every single person I share this with has a story of it either happening to them, or to someone they are close to. Pregnancy loss is so much more common than I ever realized. Why don’t we know this? Wouldn’t it be easier to know that miscarriages are so common they are almost part of the process of trying to conceive? I can’t write this without acknowledging how gobsmacked and inspired I was by @chrissyteigen ‘s bravery when she shared her miscarriage with the world in such a raw and honest way, a way we so rarely see. I am in awe of that kind of openness. So in the interest of normalizing this very difficult thing, I’d like to let you know you that are very much not alone. Though my loss was so early and considered a chemical pregnancy, I’m overwhelmed by the amount of heartbreak I feel. I just want to take a moment and send out so much love and compassion to anyone who is going through this - or has, or will. As I struggle to heal after only a few weeks, I can’t even imagine what it must feel like to miscarry at a later stage, to experience a stillbirth, to lose a grown child. Sending so much peace to anyone who is in pain, no matter what the stage.

The decision to do so wasn’t mine - it was one that was made for me by the closest people in my life. I wasn’t at the point where help was what I wanted. I was so deep underwater, in a dark reality I had fully accepted: that being isolated, withdrawn, a shell of the person I was, was what my life now looked like. I felt protected by the walls I’d built around me, a slave to laws of my own invention. I have vivid memories of the genuine confusion I felt looking in the mirror and seeing nothing at all. No Meaghan, no woman, no human, no ‘me’. Just a something. A shapeless form holding up a head. I had erased any feelings other than this. My ED was all I had. I am so proud of what I overcame. And yet, for years, the pride I felt was drowned out by shame. It took me a really long time to sort through why I wasn’t celebrating my recovery- why one of my biggest accomplishments still felt like something I wasn’t supposed to talk about. Why I still felt embarrassed about this life that I fought for with more determination and grit than I even knew I had. I navigated my way out of a world of secrets only to continue to keep them just as closely after I escaped. In fact, while this part of my story is something I’m now very open about in my personal life, this is the first time I’ve ever shared it publicly. My treatment saved my life. 20 years later, I still can’t believe what it did for me. How fortunate I was that I had access to the care I needed. And so many don’t. In the US, 30 million ppl are suffering with an ED. Despite this prevalence, less than 20% ever receive treatment. Project HEAL aims to breakdown systemic, healthcare & financial barriers to ED healing so that those who are suffering have access to the treatment that they deserve. Caption : When I was 17, I started treatment for an eating disorder. The decision to do so wasn’t mine – it was one that was made for me by the closest people in my life. I wasn’t at the point where help was what I wanted. I was so deep underwater, in a dark reality I had fully accepted: that being isolated, withdrawn, a shell of the person I was, was what my life now looked like. I felt protected by the walls I’d built around me, a slave to laws of my own invention. I have vivid memories of the genuine confusion I felt looking in the mirror and seeing nothing at all. No Meaghan, no woman, no human, no ‘me’. Just a something. A shapeless form holding up a head. I had erased any feelings other than this. My ED was all I had. I am so proud of what I overcame. And yet, for years, the pride I felt was drowned out by shame. It took me a really long time to sort through why I wasn’t celebrating my recovery- why one of my biggest accomplishments still felt like something I wasn’t supposed to talk about. Why I still felt embarrassed about this life that I fought for with more determination and grit than I even knew I had. I navigated my way out of a world of secrets only to continue to keep them just as closely after I escaped. In fact, while this part of my story is something I’m now very open about in my personal life, this is the first time I’ve ever shared it publicly. My treatment saved my life. 20 years later, I still can’t believe what it did for me. How fortunate I was that I had access to the care I needed. And so many don’t. In the US, 30 million ppl are suffering with an ED. Despite this prevalence, less than 20% ever receive treatment. Project HEAL aims to breakdown systemic, healthcare & financial barriers to ED healing so that those who are suffering have access to the treatment that they deserve.
