Today is World Ranger Day! Let’s give a massive shoutout to India’s incredible ‘Van Rakshaks’ – Protectors of Forests. These real-life superheroes protect our amazing wildlife, like the majestic one-horned rhino, tigers, elephants and every other creature that lives in wild India. Can you imagine facing danger and threat to life at work every single day? These rangers perform their duties every day to protect and secure #WildIndia🦏🌳🐊🦁🦚 India is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Our forests sequester carbon, recharge ground water, feed our rivers and regulate the climate. India has over 70% of the world’s one-horned rhinos, 70% of wild tigers, 60% of the world’s asiatic elephants, the worlds only remaining wild asiatic lion population. It is thanks to our rangers that these incredible creatures are still with us and all the life services our forests provide is possible. Unfortunately, that means humanity’s demand for ecological resources in a given year has exceeded what Earth can regenerate. Since the early 1970s, humanity has been in an ecological deficit, according to a report based on @UnitedNations data. The first global “Earth Overshoot Day” fell on 25 December 1971. This date is brought forward little by little every year, significantly impacting reserves for future generations and underscoring our responsibility to act. However, there is still time to ditch this trend if “Overshoot Day” were to be reduced by five days a year until 2050, then the planet’s resources would be sufficient for human consumption. Reversing this trend will require a concerted effort from everyone in terms of consumption, efficiency in the production of goods and energy, and robust measures to conserve nature.
Shocking, right? Microplastics are everywhere, even reaching places we thought were safe. But here’s the good news: in India, amazing people are fighting back! From Steel Cutlery Banks to biodegradable cutlery made from leaves, everyday heroes are tackling plastic pollution head-on.
