This year, 1 August is #EarthOvershootDay. Unfortunately, that means humanity’s demand for ecological resources in a given year has exceeded what Earth can regenerate.
Since the early 1970s, humanity has been in an ecological deficit, according to a report based on @UnitedNations data. The first global “Earth Overshoot Day” fell on 25 December 1971. This date is brought forward little by little every year, significantly impacting reserves for future generations and underscoring our responsibility to act.
However, there is still time to ditch this trend if “Overshoot Day” were to be reduced by five days a year until 2050, then the planet’s resources would be sufficient for human consumption. Reversing this trend will require a concerted effort from everyone in terms of consumption, efficiency in the production of goods and energy, and robust measures to conserve nature. | Posted on 01/Aug/2024 12:50:28
