Michigan Attorney General can’t get charges filed against those responsible in the Flint Water Crisis but has resources and time to charge UM students protesting to stop the genocide in Gaza, Palestine?
Unions have been at the forefront of fighting against corporate greed. They have done more than Congress or legislative bodies across the nation in protecting workers. This is why we must protect the right to organize now more than ever. #LaborDayisEveryDay

I already knew food insecurity is real for our communities, but today, it made me see it firsthand. After 4.5 hours, with the amazing leadership at the Islamic Center of Detroit, over 1,600 hot meals were served today. Hygiene kits, backpacks, and food boxes were also distributed. It was rewarding, but it also made me angry that we still can’t get addressing hungry in our country right, yet we always have money for war.

I have had to deal with Marathon Oil Refinery’s greed and their actions that never prioritize the safety and health of our community for years. The Teamsters Union (Local 283) at Marathon is on strike. First time since 1994. They have made working there unsafe with their lack of supporting measures that keep not only their workers safe but also our community from harms way. While they are on strike, Marathon has out of state folks operating the plant. This is dangerous. When I spoke to some of the workers today on the strike line, they said alarms and sirens have been going off inside the plant. A sign that they don’t know what the heck they are doing. They need our support. Even as our community has been fighting to breathe clean air, they have been on the inside dealing with Marathon’s despicable actions on the inside. If you are nearby, walk the line with them (near Fort Street and Schaefer Road), and they also welcome any food drink donations.

In India in 1984, a company driven by corporate greed that couldn’t care less about the health of the local communities – Union Carbide – was so negligent that it caused one of the worst chemical disasters in history. Around 20,000 people were killed when poison gas was released into the air. Nearly half a million people have suffered illness and premature death after the initial incident. And of course, the U.S. refused to extradite the CEO of Union Carbide to face criminal charges. Dow Chemical, based in Michigan, bought Union Carbide after the company brought death to Bhopal. Dow made money from buying that company, so they now also own the tragedy of Bhopal. I’m proud to lend my voice to the Bhopal Survivors here today to demand that they receive the just compensation from the Dow Chemical Corporation they are owed. From Detroit to Bhopal, we deserve clean air, clean water, and justice.

“Our struggle for environmental justice in Michigan and the struggle for justice in Bhopal are one and the same. This is the home state of Dow, and our solidarity here is particularly important.” “We are, collectively, tired of greedy corporations like Dow poisoning our communities and getting away with it…. Dow MUST pay for a clean up and properly compensate the people of Bhopal” This is what @rashidatlaib said during the press conference she attend along with survivors of the Bhopal disaster, and EJ leaders from the most polluted zip code in the state – 48217. On the survivors’ tour stop in Michigan, we met with the #cleantheair coalition @wearemejc as well as Congresswoman Tlaib. Rep. Tlaib was among those who signed the letter urging the US Department of Justice to respond to the Gov. of India’s court summons to Dow last October. As a result, a Dow representative showed up in a Bhopal court for the first time in two decades. We appreciate the Congresswoman’s solidarity with gas-exposed communities in Bhopal, and look forward to working with her more to continue holding Dow Chemicals accountable. #bhopal40 #justice4bhopal #bhopalustour

Our local farmers in the 12th Congressional District are blessings. From free food for our families to building sustainable environment communities, I am so proud to support their efforts for a national #FarmBill that ensures they get fair access to the same opportunities. Thank you Pamela Ronson of @seedfolxfarm, Amanda Brezelle of Fennigan’s Farm, Renee Fussello of McCauley Family Farms LLC, L’Oreal Hawkes-Williams, a farmer at Seedfolx and Executive Director of No Earth Wasted Living Ecological Awareness Farm @new_leaf_detroit and MSU’s Detroit Partnership for Learning and Innovation (DPFLI) site for allowing me into your spaces. I learned so much and will be heading to DC with a lot more fight in me. You all deserve a Farm Bill that supports your incredibly important work.
We are all sick and tired of DTE’s rate increases. Now you can do something about it. Please see info and submit comments! Share with your neighbors, family, block clubs, and more. Help get the word out. The Michigan Public Service Commission is coming in from Lansing to Detroit, and this is our chance to show up and tell them what they already should know.
