Charlie Pride must’ve been so lonesome. My Aunt Tiny says “going down the country” to mean to the farm, fishing lakes, rural areas. All my Sumter kin picked, shelled & ate fresh peas. I never had them growing up or fixed them as an adult. Made my first, pink eyes, flavorful l, tender, taste like a delicate black eyed, but they stay together. I’m returning to @thecookinggene first book for context & beginning to cook with his spices- the kitchen pepper is very special, useful, aromatic with deep memory. I let the first okra I grew dry in my kitchen window, I think I want to bronze it like a baby boot, next to a lone tomato that looks like a heart too little, too cracked to make it to the next dawn. Perspective. In 1920 when the 19th Amendment became law giving “women” the right to vote- Indigenous -Native American Women weren’t allowed to be US citizens. Asian-American immigrant women couldn’t vote until 1952 (Immigrantion & Nationality Act) Puerto Rican women couldn’t vote without a literacy test until 1975. Black Women, in the struggle for suffrage since the early 1800s continued to fight for 200 years for the right to vote (Voting Rights Act of 1965) 2024 over 90% voted for a Black Woman for President of the United States. Remarkable. This election, as history forecasted, the majority of white women are going vote white before women. The “negro” woman couldn’t vote at the same courthouse where I could today when I voted in her name.
