50 cities across Serbia have organized protests against mining giant Rio Tinto in recent months. So, who is Rio Tinto, and what is their track record? We spoke to Serbian-Australian actress and activist Bojana Novaković, who has been involved in the movement against a proposed lithium mine for several years now. #Serbia #climatechange #NeceKopati

A major showdown over the climate crisis is taking place right now in a small country in Europe. As usual, large US media outlets are silent. I am urging everyone to pay attention; the photos tell much of the story. In Serbia, a country of only 6.6 million, hundreds of thousands of citizens have taken to the streets in recent days to demand the cancellation of a new lithium mine that the notorious corporate human rights abuser Rio Tinto wants to build in an area of fertile farmland in the western part of the country. A broad coalition of Serbian scientists has concluded the mine would cause irreversible ecological catastrophe. Water would be poisoned. Hundreds of family farms would be sacrificed. It is highly unusual for such a large proportion of a nation’s citizens to stage sustained protests over a single fossil fuel project. The photos in the carousel were shot in recent days in Belgrade, the nation’s capital where I believe at least 15% of the city’s population was on the streets. This is a compelling example of what citizen power can be, and must do. It is what industry and corrupt governments fear most. And it’s deeply inspiring to witness. I want to thank Bojana Novokovic – one of the Serbian protest leaders whose picture is in the carousel — for calling this to my attention. (I met @bojnovak on this platform during my Chevron-orchestrated detention over the company’s Amazon pollution.) Also want to give a shout-out to @mar_sa_drine, the extraordinary grassroots organization in Belgrade that has been leading the opposition to Rio Tinto’s mine. Rio Tinto is a greedy Anglo-Australian company that has a long history of major human rights abuses across the globe in places like Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and California. (See the website of the London Mining Network for documentation.) Serbian President Vucic – a strongman who reportedly stole the last election – is playing jiu jitsu with the protestors by first cancelling the project and then reinstating it. Dozens of protesters have been arrested. Solidarity with @mars_sa_drine and @bojnovak. Asking @nytimes and @cnn: you going to cover this deeply impressive display of citizen power? 👊👊

🇬🇧 The propagandist came out of her frame and approached @bojnovak to ask why she was looking at her – to which Bojana said that the lady is a public figure and many people are look at and filming her. After that, we started recording live so that there would be no confusion about who came here to make provocations and who came to defend human rights and nature.
🇬🇧 After @bojnovak insisted on being be left alone by the propaganda queen who was accusing Bojana of interfering with her work, that same propagandist rushed at Bojana to ask her about her love life! The question was whether @bojnovak was dating @ofanzivan who was imprisoned two weeks ago and who is young enough to be Bojana’s son. Who here is violent towards whom?
Dear @potus – given that you’re in the middle of the biggest pardoning streak in the history of the US presidency, please consider pardoning the most renowned and yet targeted lawyer in environmental protection history – @stevendonziger, so that he and his family can live their lives and so that justice can be done and punishment inflicted on the corporations who poisoned Amazonian communities, rather than the people who protect them. Thanks!
🇬🇧Today is the final day for sending public complaints against the ministries decision on scoping! We’re not trying to incite panic. We’re just objectively saying this will be a disaster if it goes ahead.
🇷🇸Bojana Novaković: Umesto da hapse lopove koji kradu izbore, oni hapse mlade koji štite zemlju, vazduh i vodu 🇬🇧Bojana Novaković: Instead of arresting thieves who steal elections, they arrest young people who protect land, air and water. At the protest against lithium mining in Valjevo, actress Bojana Novaković said that “Serbs have agreed on something. We agree that we won’t let them dig. People are arresting our friends, comrades, associates, they want to scare us. Instead of arresting the thieves who steal elections, they arrest the young people who protect the land, air and water. She pointed out that they are “not afraid. But there is one thing, there is something that I am afraid of, and that is the devastation of nature and the environment and everything that is sacred to us in this country, I am afraid of that. But we channel that fear into energy, into action that has that united us. This government and every government after them sees us, the people. And they all need to understand that this nation will not let nature and the environment be destroyed, let this be a message for everyone.” Source: n1_srbija
