My friend @chris.smalls_ was the only black man among the 20 activists on the @gazafreedomflotilla. He also appears to be the only passenger beaten, kicked, and violently assaulted by Israeli security forces after those on the boat were illegally abducted in the Mediterranean before they could deliver life-saving humanitarian aid to starving children in Gaza. The flotilla press office reported that seven soldiers “choked [Chris] and kicked him, leaving visible signs of violence on his neck and back.” I demand the Israeli government keep its hands off Chris; release Chris and all those it abducted; allow the Handala to continue on to Gaza; end its policy of imposing deliberate starvation on the people of Gaza; and cease its illegal occupation of all Palestinian territories. As you can see from the slides, I’ve had the honor to get to know Chris well in recent years. He’s a brilliant labor leader. He scares the heck out of the oligarchs. Povodom teksta o navodnoj „pripremi arbitraže“ Rio Tinta protiv Srbije: ova informacija nije nova niti iznenađujuća. Mogućnost arbitraže je javno poznata još od 2024. godine, a o njoj je izveštavao i Investment Arbitration Reporter. Interni dokumenti objavljeni nakon „pauze“ projekta Jadar dodatno potvrđuju da je kompanija od tada razmatrala sve scenarije — uključujući arbitražu. Problem nije u činjenicama, već u načinu na koji se one politički koriste. Umesto da se javnosti objasne zakon, institucionalne nadležnosti i stvarni rizici, arbitraža se ponovo koristi kao sredstvo zastrašivanja. Kao i prethodnih godina, obrazovanje javnosti ne dolazi od političara — već od građana i civilnog društva. Zakon je jasan. Rizici su bili poznati. Arbitraža ne suspenduje srpsko pravo. 🇬🇧 – Arbitration is a real threat, but it’s important not to wave it around as political scare mongering, but rather educate the public on the realities of it’s legal paramaters. In response to the article claiming Rio Tinto is “preparing” arbitration against Serbia: this is not new information. The possibility of arbitration has been publicly known since at least 2024, including reporting by Investment Arbitration Reporter. Internal documents released after the “pause” of the Jadar project further confirm that arbitration has long been considered. The issue is not the facts, but how they are politically framed. Instead of explaining the legal framework, institutional competences, and real risks, arbitration is once again used as a scare tactic. As in previous years, public education does not come from politicians — it comes from citizens and civil society. The law is clear. The risks were known. The Forbidden Aunt, a documentary I made, is going to be at @sarajevofilmfestival as part of Cinelink! 🎉 This is such an enormous thrill for our whole team — we worked on this tiny, all-heart doc for over a decade, with next to no money and all the love. In light of recent events in Serbia I hope this film helps shed much-needed light on the devastating effects of normalizing violence against women. This isn’t just a “women’s issue.” A society that allows violence against women is a violent society, period. And it needs to be dismantled — loudly, completely, and yesterday. The women in my family lived with this reality for half a century and still show up with resilience, laughter, and an unkillable sense of humor that defies it all. This film is for them.
