Lately-ish. New York—>Chicago—>Miami—>LA, repeat. It’s been a while so lemme explain… I’ve never been good at balance. I’ve been told I look like a little boy at work, probably because my mom worked in restaurants so I usually lean old-school when it comes to uniform choices. (Sidebar: when I went to do #topchef she made me promise I would always wear my hair back properly like a “f*cking professional” and not embarrass her.) Ingredient Spotlight!! People sometimes send me pictures of things they’re not familiar with and ask me how to prepare them, so I figured why not do a series on some of these delicious, but less-common items?! First up: Fresh Chickpeas/Green Garbanzo beans. These are chickpeas that are harvested while unripe/immature. Season: Spring (no idea why they were at the market, I’ve never seen them this time of year) Origin: Modern-day Syria and Turkey Not as common in the US, but popular in Middle-Eastern and Indian cuisine Taste: Slightly sweet; like a cross between chickpea/green pea with a note of sunflower seed nuttiness. You can steam them or roast them, but I like to toss them in a hot pan with salt, Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco Vinegar. It’s like a subtly sweet salt & vinegar edamame (but more delicious than edamame). You can also shell them and cook the legume without the pod, but I kinda like eating them like this! Besties, it’s time to kiss 2024 goodbye and welcome a new year and new opportunities! We had some good times this year, and some challenges, and we made it to the other side. One thing I’m most proud of was being present in life, with my dear family and friends that I missed so many times with while prioritizing work for so long. I’m still trying to balance how to be present on social media and in my work and life. Maybe 2025 will be the year I get an assistant to help juggle it all, because it does feel overwhelming at times. But I am grateful for the opportunity to have this “problem” and spend another year sharing food and life with you. Spending a couple weeks in Paris on a project and my first stop is pretty much always Le Grand Epicerie. I love visiting small local grocery stores when I travel, but I also love this store because they have everything you could need in one place. The most gorgeous selections under one roof, and you can also stop and snack along the way.
