It’s Women’s History Month and Jody Watley has definitely been doing that for decades as quiet as it’s kept.
Here’s another HERstory moment. 💗 Did you know? Jody Watley cast as Betty “Rizzo” in the hit BROADWAY musical GREASE! Eugene O’Neil Theatre, 1996?!
Jody Watley the first African-American woman to portray the iconic Rizzo character, coming in as a replacement in the cast.
“I loved /love the movie. When this opportunity came; I was nervous and excited. Securing the role was MAJOR- New York City -BROADWAY!! The cast also included Chubby Checker, the 1950’s rock n’ roll legend whose #1 hit “Let’s Do the Twist” introduced that dance craze, had the crowd rocking in the aisles each night with the song & dance.
The show-stopping role that includes the number Beauty School Drop Out was also played by recording star Al Jarreau during Watley’s run. GREASE! was a huge challenge for me once getting into the work of it all. I cried many times in rehearsals because my confidence would wane. Fortunately, I was surrounded by a patient director, choreographer and great cast who kept encouraging me and lifting me up. I will always cherish the opportunity and experience.
Never be afraid of challenges and pushing yourself in life, and even if you have self doubt remember- You can do it!”
