Thanks to all involved and especially Nile for the permission and adding his iconic guitar 🎸 parts! Music Week, UK “Rihanna wasn’t even born when Jody Watley was having hits with Shalamar, but the two fought an Epic battle on the top of the Upfront and Commercial Pop Charts this week. It ends with an honorable draw with “I Want Your Love” by Jody Watley exploding 27 to #1 on the Upfront Chart while debuting at # 2 on the commercial Pop list. 😔💔🙏🏽🪽🕊️✨ Rest in Peace & Power D’Wayne Wiggins @dwaynewigginsofficial . You leave a legacy of great music and good vibes. It was a joy to collaborate (a couple of songs 1998 album “Flower”) and share the stage a few times in recent years. My condolences to family, loved ones and members of the group. My prayers are with you all. 🙏🏽 Reposting @tonytonitoneofficial With broken hearts, we share with you that our beloved D’Wayne passed away this morning surrounded by family and loved ones. Over the past year, he has been privately and courageously battling bladder cancer. Through this fight, he remained committed and present for his family, his music, his fans and his community. D’Wayne’s life was incomparable, and his music and service impacted millions around the world, including in his hometown of Oakland, California. He was a guitarist, producer, composer, philanthropist, mentor and founding member of Tony! Toni! Tone! He was deeply passionate about providing artist development and mentorship to emerging young musicians, helping to shape the early careers of many. For now, we ask that you continue to respect our privacy. We mourn with you, and are deeply grateful for your love and support. In Solidarity, The Wiggins Family Rest in Power. Party don’t cry. #dwaynewiggins #tonytonitone
So much sad news on a more upbeat note who loves GREASE! the movie/ musical?! #TBT It’s Women’s History Month and Jody Watley has definitely been doing that for decades as quiet as it’s kept. Here’s another HERstory moment. 💗 Did you know? Jody Watley cast as Betty “Rizzo” in the hit BROADWAY musical GREASE! Eugene O’Neil Theatre, 1996?! Jody Watley the first African-American woman to portray the iconic Rizzo character, coming in as a replacement in the cast. “I loved /love the movie. When this opportunity came; I was nervous and excited. Securing the role was MAJOR- New York City -BROADWAY!! The cast also included Chubby Checker, the 1950’s rock n’ roll legend whose #1 hit “Let’s Do the Twist” introduced that dance craze, had the crowd rocking in the aisles each night with the song & dance. The show-stopping role that includes the number Beauty School Drop Out was also played by recording star Al Jarreau during Watley’s run. GREASE! was a huge challenge for me once getting into the work of it all. I cried many times in rehearsals because my confidence would wane. Fortunately, I was surrounded by a patient director, choreographer and great cast who kept encouraging me and lifting me up. I will always cherish the opportunity and experience. Never be afraid of challenges and pushing yourself in life, and even if you have self doubt remember- You can do it!” #JodyWatley #WomensHistoryMonth #broadwaymusicals #rizzo #pinkladies #rebels #musicbringspeopletogether *No copyright infringement intended. Another music legend has gained their celestial wings 😔🙏🏽✨🪽 🕊️ Rest in Peace Roy Ayers influential vibraphonist, composer and producer whose music helped shape jazz, soul and hip hop, has passed on at 84. Roy Ayers leaves a legacy of timeless grooves and countless samples to inspire generations. It was an honor to record with Roy Ayers one of the best songs in my discography “I Love To Love” produced by house music legends Masters At Work (Louie Vega and Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez) 2000 #IYKYK and appears on my “Midnight Lounge” album. We also did a couple of concerts together that I’ll always cherish as well (SummerStage, Central Park NYC & Happy Days Soul Music Festival UK). Since today February 2, 2025 is Grammy Awards Sunday, here are a few of my Grammy looks over the years as Best New Artist 1988 winner just the 3rd black artist to win in that category at the time at the 30th ceremony (a fan pointed this significance to me recently). A multiple nominee, also presenter a couple of times in the 90’s including presenting to Toni Braxton when she won her Best New Artist award in 1994. I also announced the nominations one year. Music isn’t about awards of course but it’s a memorable experience and honor especially when it’s so unexpected! I’m blessed to continue to create, write, record, produce and release music. I’m proud of the longevity and to inspire others to believe in yourself and keep being you no matter what – that’s the big win. Some people want to see you fail, or to break your spirit and give up on yourself, – always believe in you and keep going. Everlasting. *News note: Jody Watley’s Best New Artist Win is included in the Grammy Museum Walk of Fame in downtown Los Angeles. GRAMMY WALK OF FAME, which features one commemorative disc for each year of the GRAMMY Awards from 1958 onwards when the Grammy Museum opened. Each disc contains the winners of the big four categories: Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year. #JodyWatley #BlackHistoryMonth #GRAMMYs
