In a special anniversary issue, she reflects on her journey since winning Star Academy, a path filled with triumphs and challenges. Shatha Hassoun sings in Lebanese, Egyptian, and Gulf languages to convey a message, not merely a style. “My goal was to demonstrate that Iraqi singers can legitimately perform a wide range of musical styles,” she says. Over the past eighteen years, Hassoun has pioneered Iraqi female artists’ use of multiple Arabic dialects. Her Moroccan environment shaped her love of music, but that wasn’t all. One of the first Iraqi performers to dabble with Sudanese and Omanis music, she exceeded her origins. After collaborating with Marwan Khoury, Melhem Barakat, and producer Jean-Marie Riachi, Hassoun became recognized in Lebanon. These experiences made her a bigger name in local music and improved her sound. “My goal was always to introduce the Arab audience to the true versatility of the Iraqi artist,” she said. Iraqi music is popular, yet few musicians try with new languages. While Iraqi songs should be our base, we must also show our ability to reach a wider audience through various musical forms.
