Many of us first met @iamyolaofficial around 2019. Her debut album blew us away with its soulful Americana and country blues sound… but, there is so much more to the British musician’s story. Yola’s latest project, called My Way, is a bit of a sonic reintroduction for us and an opportunity for the artist — to tell her story on her own terms. Today, Yola sits down with @kallao about making her new EP, tapping into her roots in the U.K.’s broken beat scene, writing an anthem for the children of Caribbean immigrants, and breaking free from what she calls “creative dictatorships.” This one’s a blast. I can say with my whole chest that this is definitely not always been the case. This era of my life is: the dedication of building my actual life here having crossed that big ole ocean! It’s greatly underrated what it requires to land on a new continent and I think that underestimation is down to how much we hold immigrants in high regard in society. Plus the ocean really makes a difference (ask indigenous folk about these here boarders), so to have so many people in my life that show up just because they care means a whole lot! Inspiration for this project was drawn from the African Orisha Yemaya, a goddess of the sea who is characterized by pearls, shells, and doves 🤍🌿🐚☁️🕊️🍃 To bring this world to life, I curated a collection of biophilic architecture, African landscapes, and nature-inspired design. This was used to create a custom algorithm that embodied @iamyolaofficial and my desired style. A synthesis of AI and traditional design tools were used to craft the story. Each scene began with compositing the perfect set of images, which were then transformed into videos bursting with motion 🦪 Excited to have embarked on a journey into this new frontier of filmmaking. What a beautiful challenge to bring dream worlds to life ☁️🌊🛁⛲️
