Both Rishi and I grew up as Army BRATS — forever on the move, changing schools and cities every few years. That life gave us a gift: adaptability, openness, and a deep, lived sense of India’s cultural diversity. As parents, we often ask: how do we give Nihal even a fraction of that? How do we nurture curiosity and openness beyond what a textbook can offer? One way has been to travel with that intention. Recently, a long weekend aligned — and it happened to coincide with Onam, which while native to Kerala, is also celebrated with gusto in Chennai. Icing on the cake: Nihal had just learnt about it in school. We thought, what better way for him to connect the dots than to experience it in real life? And this is where @theleelapalacechennai became more than a hotel. They didn’t just host us, they enabled immersion. From arranging traditional attire for us, to curating a traditional sadya (the Onam feast served on a banana leaf), to guiding us on a visit to the Kapaleeshwar temple, and even curating an afternoon of sari shopping — each thoughtful detail added richness to the experience. They also introduced us to Pallanguzhi, a traditional South Indian two-player board game. What began as a curious lesson in an unfamiliar game quickly turned into laughter, competition, and discovery — and has now become the household’s favorite pastime. For Nihal, this wasn’t a classroom lesson. It was the sound of temple bells, the taste of unfamiliar flavors, the joy of seeing his parents in traditional clothes, and the excitement of mastering a new game. It was culture made tangible. And for us, it was a reminder of why we travel: not to skim the surface of places, but to step into their rhythm. To immerse, to connect, and to carry home not just memories, but meaning. ❤️ P.S. BRAT is an acronym for Being Relocated All the Time . And / or Born Raised And Transferred. The term is said to have originated in the US Marine Corps- post World War II.
I’ve often wondered about the changing phases of travel and leisure. For years, my bucket list was long , driven by a fascination with history, mythology and culture. Places I want to revisit and immerse myself once again in. But all of that will have to wait, until Nihal develops that same curiosity. Parenthood has taught me a quiet truth: I’ll go to those places when Nihal shares that fascination. When he has read about those people and places , when he wants to walk those streets with wonder, when he’s old enough to ask his own questions. Until then, my energy is focused on breaks that are him-centric — doing things that make him happy, in environments where he feels comfortable. Which basically comes down to a pool… and of course, skiing (thankfully only once a year!). And so our travels come down to a mix of road trips nature focused getaways. And staycations. The way our lives are structured, weekdays are already a hustle: early mornings for school, my work compressed into school hours, then switching completely to mom-mode in the evenings. And lately, even weekends have started looking like weekdays — swimming practice in the morning, basketball in the evening, birthday parties, lunches, dinners. Where is the time to stop and pause? Where is leisure? THAT’S what I choose now. Leisure, for me, now looks very different. It’s weekends where Nihal can explore at his own pace, where the highlight is the pool, or room service, or simply having all three of us together. It’s slowing down and savoring the smaller things we never get to do in the daily hustle. That’s why we’ve embraced a slower rhythm. Hotels have become more than stopovers — they are the experience, the enabler of bonding, the stage where our memories play out. @theleelapalacechennai , the team curated a weekend of leisure just right for us. From thoughtful meals to creating space for us to balance family time with those little slices of self-care, it was everything we needed: a chance to breathe, to pause, and to live fully in the moment. ❤️

Travel has changed its meaning for us. These days, it isn’t about racing through sightseeing lists or chasing bucket-list destinations. It’s about something far more precious: being truly together. For Nihal, the highlight of any holiday is always the hotel. And the room! Ask him about any trip (some to what we think are fantastic destinations) and what he remembers most isn’t the sights — it’s the stay.😅 Because for him, the joy is in all of us being in one space, unhurried, undistracted. Meals together. (Even as his mother insists on chopsticks ) Laughter together. Time together. And leisure for us now looks like this: me in the pool with Nihal while Rishi sneaks in his gym time. Later, me slipping off to the spa while the two of them hang out together. We’re still together — but also finding those little slices of self-care that make us come back lighter. But it’s also the quieter, everyday joys that make a staycation so restorative. Ordering in room service and enjoying meals in our pajamas. Helping Nihal finish a weekend assignment without the usual rush. Catching up on leisure reading I never seem to find time for at home. These small, simple things — that we so easily lose in the hustle and bustle of daily life — suddenly feel luxurious when someone else is taking care of you. That’s why we love the rhythm of a staycation. At @theleelapalacechennai the spaces, the warmth, and the thoughtful way the hotel is designed allowed us to just be as a family. Looked after like we were at home — but in the lap of extreme comfort. Not rushing, not chasing, simply living. And sometimes, that’s the most luxurious getaway of all. ❤️ Big Thank you to the team. P.S. Swipe to the end to see, 😅

Looked after like we were at home — but in the lap of extreme comfort. Not rushing, not chasing, simply living. And sometimes, that’s the most luxurious getaway of all. ❤️ Big Thank you to the team. P.S. Swipe to the end to see, 😅
Travel has changed its meaning for us.
