Nazanin Boniadi Instagram – On March 7, 46 years ago, Iran’s newspapers published a statement made the day before by the Islamic Republic Spiritual Leader, Ayatollah Khomeini. The speech was Khomeini’s first step toward making the
wearing of the veil mandatory for Women in Iran:
I have been informed, he said « that in government ministries, women appear naked, and this is against Islamic law. Women can participate in social activities, but they must observe Islamic hejab.”
On the same day, during a speech at Feyziyeh School in Qom, Khomeini criticized harshly women, particularly female government employees:
“Women are still working in offices as they did before. They must change their way.”
Emphasizing the necessity of Islamic hejab, he declared:
“Islamic women are not dolls. They must appear in public with the veil and not adorn themselves with makeup.”
