When his family urged him to leave the country, he replied, “I am a soldier of this homeland and will not abandon it.” Those close to him described him as a capable, disciplined, courageous, patriotic, and honest leader. In court, he stated that he was ready for execution and had never been an agent of any country, emphasizing that he had flown above the clouds as Iran’s best pilot in the United States. He declared, “Everything I have done is a source of pride for me.” Nader Jahanbani was arrested on February 11, 1979, and on March 12, 1979, the Revolutionary Tribunal sentenced him to death on charges of “corruption on earth.” His execution was carried out by firing squad at 7 AM in Qasr Prison. Since their arrests in separate cases in August 2023, both have revealed being tortured and otherwise ill-treated, including gender-based violence, and held in solitary confinement. Their trials were deeply unjust, and they are at grave risk of execution. In the aftermath of the #WomanLifeFreedom uprising, Iran’s authorities have intensified the use of the death penalty as a tool of repression and fear, including against women detained on politically-motivated charges. The speech was Khomeini’s first step toward making the wearing of the veil mandatory for Women in Iran: I have been informed, he said « that in government ministries, women appear naked, and this is against Islamic law. Women can participate in social activities, but they must observe Islamic hejab.” On the same day, during a speech at Feyziyeh School in Qom, Khomeini criticized harshly women, particularly female government employees: “Women are still working in offices as they did before. They must change their way.” Emphasizing the necessity of Islamic hejab, he declared: “Islamic women are not dolls.
