I listen to and look at the life around me everywhere and all the time. I’m curious. Folks are fascinating. The myriad of lives and choices and feelings and random bits of occurrence. Sometimes it’s a little overwhelming , the bang of loneliness or sorrow that leaks out of someone…. That you ( and by you I mean me and you, we ) can’t fix or even intrude upon….. Sometimes it’s joyful or even hilarious….
One day , travelling into town on a bus I couldn’t help overhearing the conversation taking place in the seat in front of me between 2 young students ( late teens I’d say, maybe just started college). I wasn’t so much earwigging as they were talking loudly and confidently…laying out their life goals….and they were astonishing to me, no lofty aspirations, it was all about creature comforts and perfect partners. I had a good laugh at my own reaction …. Initially a bit judgey McJudgeypants …. Then remembering Life, and the way it goes, and all the things it would put in front of them … and I wondered where they would be in 20 years and if they’d still be friends and if they’d ever remember the conversation on the bus 🚌.
