He has additional needs and has faced a lot of different challenges …..physical, intellectual and emotional …. on his journey to adulthood. I don’t mean to imply in ANY way that he is broken or that broken necessarily means beautiful…..what I wanted to say , to folks who haven’t had the privilege of having our son as part of their family, is that DIFFERENT does not mean worse….. that facing and navigating challenges ( although sometimes very difficult) earns resilience and deepens real empathy. “Disappointment is not a stranger and pain is not a shroud”. Song #9 F&%kability I listen to and look at the life around me everywhere and all the time. I’m curious. Folks are fascinating. The myriad of lives and choices and feelings and random bits of occurrence. Sometimes it’s a little overwhelming , the bang of loneliness or sorrow that leaks out of someone…. That you ( and by you I mean me and you, we ) can’t fix or even intrude upon….. Sometimes it’s joyful or even hilarious…. One day , travelling into town on a bus I couldn’t help overhearing the conversation taking place in the seat in front of me between 2 young students ( late teens I’d say, maybe just started college). I wasn’t so much earwigging as they were talking loudly and confidently…laying out their life goals….and they were astonishing to me, no lofty aspirations, it was all about creature comforts and perfect partners. I had a good laugh at my own reaction …. Initially a bit judgey McJudgeypants …. Then remembering Life, and the way it goes, and all the things it would put in front of them … and I wondered where they would be in 20 years and if they’d still be friends and if they’d ever remember the conversation on the bus 🚌. The first one has 4 small citrine stones sewed on, I found them in a charity shop in Glasgow when mooching around one day on a day off from @outlander_starz , and the navy red ribbon band is from a little shop in Prague when I was filming @thewheeloftime . The second cushion has a little rose bead which comes from a favourite bracelet that broke , and the underlying blue ribbon was bought with @thisismariamckee about 20 years ago in Dublin! Song 11 – ALL THE FEELS This is a hard song to describe , it makes me uncomfortable, brings me to a place when I was afraid….. but talking is always good and by the time I wrote it I was out of the scary feeling ….and writing it helped me to understand the feeling and to know that it could pass. I have been witness to a lot of mental health issues among my close community and I try to be vigilant, I try to check in with/on friends ….and with myself …and when I feel the Blue coming I make myself walk and be active and fight to resist the deep temptation to crawl under a blanket…..there are always demands you have to fulfill that keep you (one) upright ….the needs of children or other dependents, work tasks or obligations …. But in the other time we have for ourselves , try to mind your minds….. they fly away sometimes ….. call them gently, kindly back. He was very gracious and generous to contribute at a time when he was just off a load of touring and trying to figure out the next way forward. The song itself is a song of hope, of going forward and continuing to sing ( whatever that means for you) even when it seems like a hard road ahead. Damien’s kindness back then seemed to echo the sentiment and was a little bit of light .
