Repost from @kidsstoppress using @RepostRegramApp – M0THERHOOD DOESN’T DEFINE ME
I was born a nomad. I am spontaneous. I have no regrets. Even with twins, a routine doesn’t suit me. I have no typical day and that’s my comfort zone. I feel like I’m in the center of this magnificent whirlwind where forces like serendipity, change, faith, personal determination, and support come together, creating new aspects.
I have two daughters and I got them through surrogacy. Was it easy? I made it easy for myself because I strongly believe that things always work out for the best. Life is for you. It understands the need of the hour. If you get pessimistic and believe that life is against you, then that’s what defines you and you’ll find yourself controlling everything. After many years of self-development, I have changed. I make a decision, do everything I can for it and then learn how to let go. It was the same during my journey of surrogacy.
The journey was filled with experiences. It didn’t happen so easily. There were moments of frustration but I knew if it was meant to be it would happen. Throughout the 9 months we received updates – but did this mean I stopped my whole world because I couldn’t wait to see my babies or had no idea what the outcome would be? No. Simultaneously, I was finishing my work and my memoir, Close To The Bone. I worked until the very last day. I truly believe that motherhood doesn’t define me.
I remember the day. When my husband told me that our 2 daughters had arrived, my heart did a little jig. But when people ask me if it’s the best moment of my life, I say, “I wouldn’t think so. Motherhood doesn’t define me.” Through my life, I have learned to separate love and attachment. I am my best self when I do that and that doesn’t make me love my kids any less.
Close to The Bone is very special to me and I believe it needs time too. The book is about the eras I’ve lived through, the places I’ve been to, my experiences. I’m always true to myself and this is my medium to talk about my diagnosis.
I’ve learned a lot from my successes and failures. It’s important for my kids to see I work, that I have a voice and can make a difference in the world.
‘Life Hugger’ a review of #ClosetotheBone by Sanjukta Sharma in Live Mint, 11 May 2019 .
Lisa Ray’s memoir reveals a life of struggle and joy, and a gifted writer at work
.
.
.
Lisa Ray’s first book, Close To The Bone, is anything but a cancer memoir. Cancer can obliterate any identity other than that of a cancer survivor, at least in the minds of those who know the person. Ray was the first Indian from the glamour industry who shared her journey with the disease, even her steroid-fuelled “moon face” with the world, and is therefore known as one of those supercharged, inspiring survivors who continue to be associated with cancer long after she has left the disease behind.
The book brings alive a life in entirety. Ray drifts in and out of black holes, sometimes loathing herself, sometimes blissfully free of self-pity, throughout the narrative, which begins with her childhood in a predominantly Italian neighbourhood in Toronto and ends with a fairy-tale marriage to management consultant Jason Dehni after healing from cancer.
.
Ray really can write, and that makes it an actor-model memoir that doesn’t depend entirely on anecdotal, name-dropping gloat—it reminded me of the books written by British actor Rupert Everett, also a great writer, but who writes with more savage glee. Memories do solidify into anecdotes, as we, and all memoirists, know, and good memoirs have intricate architecture and ideas around anecdotes. Their truth is not sullied by a lack of imagination.
And the @closetothebone.book tour begins. Doing a wee book signing at #Relaybookstore in @csiamumbai swing by before catching your flight

I’ve been meditating for 7 or 8 years now, and my practice has been daily(ish) for maybe the last two. I got into the practice thinking (hoping!) it would somehow cure me of my anxiety, my people-pleasing, my perfectionism… that all my unhealthy thought patterns would, somehow, just go away. Well, I am sorry to report that meditation has cured me of exactly nothing; my mind is like a great big sky that can never be fully empty of thought clouds. What it HAS done, though, is taught me to notice them, notice that they’re thoughts—just thoughts!—and not incontrovertibly true statements about me and my life. Sometimes I still get caught in the deluge, but more and more I’m able to lay back and watch them blow harmlessly across the sky.
🌤
Happy Friday, beautiful followers! I’m glad you’re here and I’m hoping for (literal and figurative) sunny skies for you this weekend.

Can I share that this post made me weep? Turned my heart into a dervish? To be seen- really seen- is an ache that has dogged me my whole life. To be seen by a poet is a sort of grace I hoped for but never anticipated. Thank you @thepoetresse Repost from @thepoetresse using @RepostRegramApp – For the last five days, I’ve been living with, in, around and about Lisa Ray. Close To The Bone keeps you very close to itself.
To come out of the experience is like having been on a ride mapped by a maverick, driven by a rockstar and narrated by a poet.
Is Lisa Ray a part of divinity’s special scheme? Does a brighter light shine on her? Can she make you rewind, restart, resmile and resee with the sheer electricity of a mind always on? Yes, yes and yes….and then a world of it more.
Thank you and congratulations @lisaraniray for this priceless gift to the world.
Hope your words travel everywhere 💕

This message from a true reader and sensitive soul makes my heart sing Repost from @pallavisymons using @RepostRegramApp – I received Lisa’s book Close to the Bone as a birthday present and was in the middle of reading it yesterday when I had to go out and make her up for the first launch event of the book. The lure of the book matched the excitement at the prospect of making up its author and I’m so glad that I got to indulge in both! Now, I’m curled up again, reading, immersed and free falling! Thank you @teasemakeup for the book and @lisaraniray for such a beautiful read. I can’t wait to finish it but then again, I dont want to either! #closetothebone #lisaraniraytheauthor #notonlyamemoir

“Illness is the night side of life, a more onerous citizenship. Everyone who is born holds a dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick. Although we all prefer to use only the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place.” That’s the prologue of the book, words by Susan Sontag.
.
.
She further writes somewhere “The doctor reminded me of the rabit in Alice in Wonderland. As he kicked me down the hole, he never said the word cancer. In fact , the signs in the clinic were vague: Hematology Centre. But the pregnant pause told me i was being inducted into a new club: ‘Fatal.’ Pause. ‘Incurable.'”

Thank you so much for penning down this beautiful memoir right from your heart. Am already glued to your words. And i never knew there is such a lovely poet hidden inside of you @lisaraniray

I am also looking forward to be in conversation with a fiery poet and soul @karunaezara So very looking forward to be in conversation with this fellow story-teller Repost from @karunaezara using @RepostRegramApp – When I was a young journalist at a fancy magazine, my editor told me the cover photo should always be one with eye contact. “Arrest the reader,” she meant. When I saw Lisa’s book, it was the first thing that struck me – she was breaking rules. And as I began to read, it made sense. I grew up knowing Lisa Ray as that light-eyed model the boys around me just couldn’t get enough of, but a few years ago, quite by chance I stumbled upon an Instagram profile called @ProtestPoet. It claimed to be poems by the actress herself. I was astounded, because they were good. Like really, really good. They were angry, feminist as fuck, deep, calm, spiritual…I was intrigued. I was a fan. When I heard she had written a book, I actually pre-ordered, hungry for her words, and to hear her story in her voice (as opposed to the tabloids and over-eager journalists’ over the years). Unbeknownst to me, around this time, Lisa too must have found me online. As things happen…here we are. I am so, so honoured to present @lisaraniray’s incredible book, @CloseToTheBone.Book in Calcutta, her ancestral home. Tomorrow evening at 6:30pm at @Experimenter.Kol. See you there ❤️
