There are a historic amount of incredible Black candidates running across the country at every level of government. Candidates that care about the community at large, that can lead us out of darkness. Change starts with your own community, your town, your city, your state. Vote for you and your life and your community. Pull TF up and let’s get this done. #votetolive

This week’s #WCW is dedicated to @howard1867 alum, scientist, environmentalist, public health advocate AND activist Michelle T. Mabson (@mabsonsays).
Michelle is a staff scientist at @Earthjustice, the largest nonprofit environmental law organization in the country, holding polluters and the government accountable and working to ensure that communities are protected from pollution and toxic chemicals.
At the same time she co-founded and serves as the Chief Advocacy Officer for Black Millennials for Flint (@blackmillennials4flint), a D.C.-based grassroots #EnvironmentalJustice org, and the first of its kind in the nation working to reduce #LeadExposure in Black and Brown communities.
You can hear Michelle on the latest episode of the #TheCoolestShow on climate around, @Think100Climate podcast, as she discusses translating the #intersectionality of science, rebuilding the EPA, and “Big Greens” making space for organizations with fewer resources. So happy to be uplifting environmental racism expert, Ingrid Waldron as my #WCW for this week. Among many things, Toronto born @waldroningrid is a @DalhousieU professor, Author, Director of the ENRICH Project & Co-producer of the @Netflix documentary “There’s Something in the Water”.
Based on Dr. Waldron’s first book, #TheresSomethingInTheWater, examines the legacy of #EnvironmentalRacism and its health impacts in #Indigenous and #BlackCommunities in Canada, using #NovaScotia as a case study, and the grassroots resistance activities by Indigenous and Black communities against the pollution and poisoning of their communities.
As the Director of the ENRICH Project over the last 8 years, Dr. Waldron has been investigating the socio-economic, political, and health effects of environmental racism in Mi’kmaq and African Nova Scotian communities.
Next Wed Oct. 28, you can find @waldroningrid on the @Climate.Refugees panel discussing “The Intersections of Climate Change & Race” organized by the Institute for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University (@ishr_columbia) and @Climate.Refugees. Follow her journey here → @waldroningrid
This week my #WCW is Frances A. Pérez-Rodríguez, aka @freedomfransorants. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York 🇵🇷🏙 Frances has dedicated her career to making sure everyone has access to nutritious, sustainably grown food.
Frances prides herself on being @wokefoods Food & Land Education Coordinator, @RiseAndRootFarm’s market manager, and a member of @LaFincaDelSur Community Farm (The farm of the South) where she grows produce and herbs, and assists with culturally-relevant programming centered around #UrbanAgriculture, #FoodSovereignty, and healing with herbalism, political education, and the ability to reimagine our world.
A daughter, a youth leader, a #CommunityOrganizer, and above all, seeker of truths, Frances is deeply inspired by the reality of maintaining a healthy relationship with the planet and with one another through connecting with and freeing the land. Follow her journey @freedomfransorants
“Why do we have traumatic relationships to the land, what was our relationship to the land prior to slavery, and how can we reimagine those relationships in way’s that are exciting and proactive to who we are?”
Today my #WCW goes to Summer Dean (@climatediva) a climate communicator, model & imperfect intersectional #environmentalist, working to demystify and create digestible, actionable content about complex issues like the #ClimateCrisis, climate justice, and politics.
For too long, the climate crisis and environmental issues have been miscommunicated, and Summer is working to change that. Her work focuses on empowering people to take meaningful, systemic actions to dismantle these broken systems of White supremacy, political corruption, and climate breakdown.
With a Bachelor’s degree in #environmental studies, and a background in #RenewableEnergy, Summer aims to continue doing work in the renewable energy world, because she understands that we can’t have a sustainable future unless we have a #JustTransition to a renewable energy economy. Follow her journey here —> @climatediva
“It doesn’t even matter if you’ve never thought about climate change before! We need you now. Earth needs you now.”
This weeks #WCW is dedicated to Kiersten Black (@Blake.creates), also known as Blake, Kier, or Kier-Bear.
Kiersten is an aspiring author, recent @NYU graduate & co-founder of Start: Empowerment (@start.empowerment) a youth-led #nonprofit that seeks to revolutionize education and prepare students to become changemakers by bringing awareness to #environmental and #SocialJustice initiatives and issues, both past and present, and aid in the further integration of these interrelated justice matters in the everyday actions of participants.
She co-founded @start.empowerment after working on various #HumanRights advocacy, organizational #sustainability, and education policy projects and initiatives in the Middle East and East Africa. Through Start: Empowerment, and her personal platforms, Kiersten is working to tackle #ClimateChange and address its root cause, while educating the U.S population and inspiring others to take action. Follow her journey here → @Blake.creates @start.empowerment
“Major issues affecting international development include increasing climate disasters and the subsequent plight of climate refugees. By increasing awareness of the importance of seeking justice for these individuals, we can move toward a more equitable world”.
Today, MY #WCW is Daphne Frias (@frias_daphne), a 22-year-old self-proclaimed #ClimateWarrior & gun violence prevention #activist from #WestHarlem, New York.
Her passion for helping communities achieve #SocialJustice is rooted in personal experience. Daphne lives with #CerebralPalsy, and describes growing up in a world in which society fails to create spaces for the #DifferentlyAbled to succeed, hold positions of leadership, and thrive in general.
First inspired by Florida’s Parkland shooting to get engaged in activism, she arranged busing for more than 100 students from campus to a nearby @MarchForOurLives event, and has since become the New York State Director for March for Our Lives. Also an active advocate for #climatejustice, Daphne is using her voice to educate people on the implications this has for those who are differently-abled.
Daphne is a nationally acclaimed activist, a delegate at the @UnitedNations Youth Climate Summit, founder of @BoxTheBallot, and she just began med school. There is so much more to this amazing young lady, make sure you’re following @frias_daphne to encourage her along her journey.
“I get to be part of the best generation. We are not sitting complacently, but are the ones actively fighting to save the world.”
It’s been a couple weeks, right?! With everything going on in the world, I hope my #WCW serves as a spot of encouragement in your day. With that said, today my post is dedicated to environmental justice crusader, and Co-founder & Executive Director of WE ACT for Environmental Justice, Peggy Shepard (@weact4ej).
Peggy’s career has been built around #empowering and being a voice for the disenfranchised. On #MartinLutherKing Day in 1988, Peggy was one of seven people arrested for holding up traffic to protest sewage polluting in a local river system. She turned that into co-founding WE ACT to campaign for environmental health and justice for the West Harlem community.
WE ACT’s mission is to build #HealthyCommunities by ensuring that #PeopleOfColor and/or low income residents participate meaningfully in the creation of sound and fair #EnvironmentalHealth and protection policies and practices.
To this day she is calling out the lapses of federal agencies in addressing #EnvironmentalJustice, and demanding that the next administration be held accountable instead of “taking stuff they are [already] doing and calling it environmental justice.” We stand with you Peggy.
To learn more about her journey, and lend support follow @weact4ej
This week, my #WCW is Anika Goss-Foster (anik_sg), a #nonprofit leader from Detroit, Michigan. She is the executive director of the Detroit Future City (@detroitfuturecity), a framework for decision making that reflects the best of Detroit’s imagination & innovation to create a more prosperous, connected & sustainable city.
A leading force and visionary in Detroit’s revitalization, Anika has repositioned the organization to be laser-focused on the #equitable implementation of its community and economic development and land use and #sustainability priorities.
Anika has led the development of several significant research studies, including the 2019 release of “Growing Detroit’s African-American Middle Class” comprehensive data report supporting attraction, retention and growth strategies. She also has helped bolster the future of Detroit’s land use and sustainability through awarding over $330,000 in grants aimed at accelerating vacant land revitalization in #Detroit and developing a dynamic community educational network of nearly 50 neighborhood leaders and nonprofits to develop standardized green stormwater infrastructure practices.
