Happy Pioneer Day! . If you are a Utahn or are familiar with Utah, then today is a holiday! The 24th of July. A state holiday where there are parades, BBQ’s, pageants, and rodeos. Pioneer Day celebrates the first Mormon pioneers entering the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The story goes that Brigham Young, the Mormon prophet at the time who traveled by wagon to the Utah Valley, pointed his finger towards what is now Salt Lake City and said “This is the place”. . I come from a lineage of pioneers, some who immigrated from England, Denmark, and Norway. Colleen: “We had a map in the basement and would reference it as we watched the landing on the moon in our living room. It was just our family and I was 19 years old.” . Bruce: “I remember watching it on TV in Murray, Utah, with family friends, the Martins, and their relatives. I was 22 years old. We watched the whole thing and no one said anything. We were in awe. I was glad it wasn’t me, just in case they got a flat tire, they wouldn’t have made it back home. It was awesome.
